probs with Mule on Mac OS X

I'm trying to get a working XEmacs w/Mule running on a new Mac OS X machine. I noticed that when I compile --with-mule, the fonts are noticeably more blurry then when I compile --with-mule=no. Other than this, there are no changes. Any ideas what in Mule could be causing this difference in my font (default 12-pt Courier)? Unsure if the problem remains there or not.
