GPLv3|L8R -- Status report - ready for inspection?
7 years, 6 months
Mats Lidell
Hi,
Here comes yet another status report from the project of converting to
GPLv3 or later.
There are two lists of files below. The first list contains all files
that are in an undecided state. Please inspect: Do we need to do anything
with them. If so what?
The second list contains all files that we can leave untouched and the
reason for that. Please inspect: Are all reasons OK and correct?
Are we getting close to the were an inspection of the xemacs-gplv3
repository could be performed? With the intent that it that is OK we
could merge back to trunk and go GPLv3 or later?

[Bug: 21.5-b34] smtpmail only works after eval'ing
9 years, 2 months
Marcus Harnisch
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
During debugging the root cause of unexplicable SMTP authentication
failures it turned out that after eval'ing the buffer "smtpmail.el"
things suddenly started working :-/
This behavior is reproducible.
Some variables from smtpmail.el receive their settings via
customize. Anything else I can help with? I guess I could check which
parts of smtpmail.el really need to be eval'ed.
Cheers
Marcus

(I've copied xemacs-beta as that is the medium for communication among
the XEmacs developers and maybe someone else will want to chime in.)
I don't really understand your points; I'll explain the situation as I see it:
1. I am currently making Windows installation kits. Those kits are
built with VS6. The Windows Installation kits, at least in part
thanks to your prodding/encouragement, are an ongoing activity. I
generally create a new installation kit with each update to the 21.5
development branch.
2. If someone else wants to build Windows Installation kits using a
different version of Visual Studio (or a different toolchain
altogether), he or she is welcome to work through the issues
necessary. I am happy to advise/help in that effort, but I do not
currently have a copy of VS2012 or VS2013, so my advise will be
somewhat theoretical in nature. You (or whoever else wants to take
this on) will have to roll up your sleeves and struggle with various
issues (manifest files among them).
Whether or not XEmacs is serious and alive, is, IMO, in the eye of the beholder.
Thanks for the bug report on paren highlighting. Since you narrowed
the failure down to the menu, I will take a look at that.

Dear Biswajit,
Thanks for your efforts. Manifest files are one of the annoyance of
updating to a newer version of VS.
Good luck, and please keep xemacs-beta informed of your progress.

make-overlay and endpoints
9 years, 6 months
Marcus Harnisch
Hi all
I have encountered an issue with respect to compatibility between
Emacs overlays and our extents. Here's what the GNU Emacs List
Reference Manual says:
“The arguments front-advance and rear-advance specify the marker
insertion type for the start of the overlay and for the end of the
overlay, respectively. See Marker Insertion Types. If they are both
nil, the default, then the overlay extends to include any text
inserted at the beginning, but not text inserted at the end.”
This appears to be the same as with extents.
However, when creating an overlay in Emacs that has identical start
and end positions and the default endpoint properties, then deleting
characters at that position does not delete the overlay.
In XEmacs 21.5.34 doing the same with an extent
(start-closed/end-open) removes the extent from the buffer.
“Deletion of a character on a side of a zero-length extent whose
corresponding endpoint is closed causes the extent to be detached if
its `detachable' property is set; if the corresponding endpoint is
open, the extent remains in the buffer, moving as necessary.”
What exactly does “a character on a side” mean. I can only delete a
character “at” the extent. In which case the start-closed seems to
have a higher priority.
In the case at hand this is easy enough to work around, but I am
wondering if that difference is deliberate, whether it may make sense
to change the behavior or whether to tell authors to not rely on
either behavior since it is a nasty corner case scenario anyway.
Thanks
Marcus

Biswajit -
Not to be too thick, but what is paren-highlighting supposed to do? I
haven't used it for a long time. How did you turn it on?
The standard approach for reporting bugs is:
1. This is what I did. It's always best to start from some known
minimal place, like "xemacs -vanilla".
2. This is what I expected. E.g. When I opened this file and moved my
cursor to the first curly brace, I expected the curly brace to change
into a dancing hippo.
3. This is what I got. E.g. The curly brace didn't change
When you wrote: "the build fail very quickly" what does that mean?
Did you try to use VS6? See the 3 simple steps above.

OK, so please start "xemacs -vanilla" and tell xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org
what steps are necessary to reproduce the problem. Please be sure to
describe a simple test case, including a simple file that exhibits the
problem. Often by stripping the problem down to a basic test case,
the problem will become obvious to you and/or others.

the file nt/README in the source has some (slightly bit-rotted)
instructions.

That's terrific. If you can build against Visual Studio Community
2013, and document the steps you take, that would be great.
I will review the information and get the necessary changes
checked in.

Vin

Does http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/windows/testing/XEmacs_Setup_21.5.34.exe
(or http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/windows/testing/XEmacs_Setup_21.5-2015-05-18.exe)
work for you?
The instructions (based on the non-free Visual Studio 6 - what're you
staring at? It was released in 1998!) work for me. If someone wants
to update the instructions, patches will be reviewed and approved. :-)

Vin

Dear XEmacs Developers,
I recently got a large roundtuit dropped in my lap (my startup company
imploded), so I've spent a few days working on XEmacs native Windows
setup kits.
On Fri, Oct 31, 2014 at 8:45 PM, Biswajit Khandai <b_khandai(a)yahoo.com> wrote:

Your assumption is correct, but I am the only someone who builds these
kits. I will try to make a setup kit for every release, but it is
difficult for me to know how much time I will have for making setup
kits in between releases.
> However, if that assumption is wrong, I would like you to know that a heck

Dear Biswajit - thank you for your kind words. They certainly made me
feel like my efforts in this area have been well worthwhile.
I have re-made setup kits for 21.4.22, 21.5.34 and 21.4 latest and
21.5 latest. I will upload them this afternoon to ftp.xemacs.org.
I will be sending a small patch to XEmacs-patches to work around a
couple of difficulties building without TLS on native Windows. I have
not attempted to build with TLS as of yet.

Xemacs (Mule) and GNU Emacs, problem with drafts and encoding.
9 years, 7 months
Uwe Brauer
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to gmane.emacs.gnus.general as well.
Hello
I use gnus with both Emacsen. However the drafts which are saved are not
compatible with each other.
According to the documentation"
,----
|
| `message-draft-coding-system' is a variable declared in Lisp.
| -- loaded from "message"
|
| Value: escape-quoted
|
| Documentation:
| *Coding system to compose mail.
| If you'd like to make it possible to share draft files between XEmacs
| and Emacs, you may use `iso-2022-7bit' for this value at your own risk.
| Note that the coding-system `iso-2022-7bit' isn't suitable to all data.
`----
I tried that but this coding setting but alas it does not make the
drafts compatible.
Why does Xemacs not support the utf-8 coding for drafts, although in
general it does support this format?
regards
Uwe Brauer
