Finally got around to building the latest version of xemacs. Basically the version before the gplv3 release on Friday. Everything went smoothly (except that I forgot to reconfigure so I was getting a splash screen that kept saying 21.5.29 instead of 30). It's been working fine after a few hours of normal usage, so I thought I'd do M-x build-report. That works until it tries to fill in the message buffer with the build information. The lisp backtrace is appended below. I ran src/xemacs to get this. If I try to run build-report using the my locally installed version, it's a bit worse. cooking with cygwin 13 years, 3 months

I've started tricking out my cygwin environment to build xemacs under with X. is complaining about missing libraries and I don't know what packages I will need in order to complete the build. It's certainly true that I've never done what Jeff just did, and actually code things up. However, for any number of projects I've had to investigate GTK/GNOME-related stuff, and (maybe I'm just old, but) GTK programming, *especially* that parts implementing the kind of desktop integration you are talking about, never really made sense to me. My impression was that it's going to be nontrivial to get most of that stuff to work. And the configuration stuff is worse. Well, no, I don't believe that. I believe recent GTK is capable of putting up windows on multiple displays, but I don't know about the user preference stuff (ie, xrdb). DPI it probably will get OK, and client-side rendering means that you'll have a consistent set of fonts available to the client (which is unfortunate when the client is Linux and the server is a Mac, but oh, well :-). Still, I'll believe that it works with a reasonably small number of gotchas when I see it. Fix compile issues for C89 compilers. 13 years, 3 months

xemacs-gtk now displaying unicode 13 years, 3 months

I have the internal char to utf-8 decoding function done, and now xemacs-gtk can use pango to display well rendered unicode characters. There are still some problems with descenders, see Khmer, but most other combining marks are displayed correctly. Some of them are showing up as extra spaces. I have a screenshot at http://i.imgur.com/PfcSP.png On the left is xemacs, on the right is gedit, which also uses pango. Some of the characters require a taller line, like Khmer. Down near the bottom you can see Shavian, which isn't on the BMP, which xemacs can't currently handle. Here's a second screenshot, which shows right to left languages. Anywhere there's a box with hexadecimal digits is character that's not in the default Monospace font under Gnome, DejaVu Sans Mono. I haven't dealt with alternate fonts yet. The file is one I saved from the gmane.emacs.devel list, which I've attached. Our etc/HELLO also displays well.

Haiku OTH can be built with gcc4 but then we loose binary compatibility that is the target for R1.
