Hi, I compiled xemacs myself and installed into $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname
I then made a symlink of $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname/bin/xemacs to $HOME/bin/xemacs
I untarred the sumo tarball from http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/xemacs-sumo-2009-02-17.tar.gz and untarred it into $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname/lib/xemacs, which made a directory called xemacs-packages there.
When I run xemacs, I am not able to update my packages.
I go to Tools -> Packages -> Set Download Site -> Official Releases -> US and choose US Main.
I then go "update package index" or any other command in the Tools menu about Packages and it complains: "symbol's value as variable is void: allow-remote-paths"
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

I was trying to avoid URIs since they are such a PITA. I have spent
hours hacking them and they are no fun at all: very tricky to debug and
the syntax from hell. So, I decided to find a quick hack like you
suggest. Since XEmacs doesn't ship with a wrapper, I created one...

So when I install Xemacs there are useless items on the Tools menu marked
"Games" and "Calendar". How do I access them? They are all greyed out. Or
if they don't really exist, why are they even listed?

closing named branches in the repository

I've made a bit of a mess in the xemacs-gtk repository by working on two
separate machines and merging.
I tried named branches but didn't do it right, and did a poor job of
merging ChangeLogs.
I have a tendency to work on more than one thing at once. It's a lot
easier to use separate check out directories
or named shelves to switch between changeset.
I think I've repaired it with "hg rebase", and I closed my named branches
using method 1 in
http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/PruningDeadBranches.
There are 4 named branches in the current repository. Only one of them has
two parents, which I think
means it was merged back into the default. Should we close them for at least
aesthetic reasons?

Scrolling large images

So, feeling pretty cocky after figuring out the color map thing with
the crashing GIFs, here is the next niggle I have:
When a large image is displayed in XEmacs, I can't scroll down and see
the part of the image that isn't room for "on the first page" in the
frame.
I.e. load this image in an XEmacs window of say 42 chars~700 pixels
height:

I can't scroll further down than around the 600-mark - neither using the
arrow keys, page down, nor the scroll wheel.
The scroll wheel takes me down a little further than the arrow down and
page down keys, but not much.
It isn't much of a problem when just displaying a single image, as in
the example above, but when you are reading an HTML-article on
news.gwene.org which has large images in it, it quickly gets quite
annoying.
Are there any fixes for this?
Is it a fundamental thing, or something that someone stumbling through
the code could have a chance to do something about? Where to start?

comint-replace-by-expanded-filename and Slime

This doesn't work. I always get a error from
comint-replace-by-expanded-filename which says "last thing matched was
not a buffer". I don't really understand what that means, but this
means filename completion doesn't work.
Looking at comint-replace-by-expanded-filename, I see a call to
replace-match, but that doesn't need a buffer does it? It just needs
some match to so it knows what to replace.

Several xemacs ideas:
* I added -mwindows to the winclient linker step which results in a
much improved winclient.
I'll take this patch to xemacs-patches by myself.
* parseCommandLine() does not work on cygwin this way.
It uses the Win32 API to find files, and should be special cased to
use the POSIX API.

As I say, I haven’t used slime much, and from looking a bit closer at the
slime code I can imagine my change being irritatingly slow to update
modelines in buffers that have just been displayed, after having been hidden
for some time. If you notice this, please give the below a shot; as well as
updating the modeline with each slime event received, it’ll update the
modeline every time XEmacs has nothing to do (that is, you’ve stopped typing
for five seconds, or whatever.) The older version of the recompute function
was a little readier to force a modeline update, which is not ideal if the
function is to be called from pre-idle-hook.
