advice for `split-window' and `delete-window' that would break the
window-configuration code?

Do we really the need the cons return value? It seems the return value
of `save-window-excursion' is rarely used---I'd rather just return the
mapping, and the let the user preserve the return value if necessary?
(I didn't see a use for `save-window-excursion/mapping' in your ECB
patch, which is why I'm asking.)

[Bug: 21.4.21] ABORT() in Fget_buffer_window()

I can repeatably hit the following ABORT() in window_loop():

The following steps cause the abort to occur:
1. Start XEmacs under X
2. M-x make-frame-on-display RET remotehost:0 RET
3. Minimise the original frame with C-z
4. On the remote system, M-x shell
The problem doesn't occur if step 3 is omitted.
However, I can't reproduce this with -vanilla. This appears to be
connected with the fact that my init files set shell-multiple-shells
to t and create two shells (so step 4 creates a third). If I kill
those first, the problem disappears.
BTW, the src/.gdbinit file doesn't work for me; it complains with:

Hi,
finally I found time to take a closer look at how to keep
the xemacs package of VM up to date with upstream.
Upstream has a different directory layout than the current
vm package which seems to have the one of VM 7.19, i.e. all
sources in the base directory of the package except for the
pixmaps which are in "etc/".
But taking a look at the package of gnus I started to modify
it to match the layout of upstream which simplifies syncing
a lot.
Are such changes o.k.?
Also I have added a line to "package-compile.el" in order to
make pre-loading of vm-macros.el etc. work.
The Makefile introduces a lot of new dependencies, which are
not required by the core of vm but by addons, I hope this is
o.k.
The list of provides in "package-info.in" has to be updated
by hand if I am correct?
Also I bundle a newer version of vcard.el with vm, than the
one provided by the gnus package. How are such duplicates
handled? IMHO it would be better to have vcard.el in another
package required by the packages which need it.
A incomplete diff is below ...

0. Until now, nobody's ever tried it even though it's been announced
four times. If nobody wants it, well then! ;-)
That's the main thing. Now that people are showing interest, I have
some incentive to work on the following 5 bugs. (The solution to #2
is probably for me to just get over it, but the others are real bugs.)
1. It really should be merged with or replace what-cursor-position.
This means deciding whether it goes in core, xemacs-base, or
xemacs-devel. Given the use case here, I tend to favor xemacs-base.
2. It's insanely complicated for the amount of functionality it
actually provides. I'm embarrassed!
3. The geometry management is buggy. There's a bunch of ugly cruft
to fine-tune the window origin that I'd really like to get rid of.
4. It's really ugly in 21.4 because 21.4 doesn't have a way to get
rid of all window manager decorations. Presumably in the next
release....
5. Internal formatting has a nasty bug in that it will easy run off
the right edge of the window for long properties. Since it's not
under control of the WM there's no way to deal with this.

I downloaded the completely xemacs-packages tree again and applied
Mats patch
- without the patch for XEmacs.rules
- with the patch for XEmacs.rules
The good news are that the packages compiles even without the patch
for XEmacs.rules
The bad news are, that, unfortunately, the difference in an important
file, namely auto-autoloads.el is significant.
Frankly I have difficulties to see why I should submit, the resulting
packages will not work correctly and we had, quite recently
(justified) complains by the auctex team about our outdated auctex
pkg. So to have complains that the resulting packages does not work,
does not do any good to Xemacs.
I therefore propose to apply the XEmacs.rules patch *before* I submit.
I attach the diffs of the XEmacs.rules and auto-autoload.el files.

batch-byte-compile problem

files 'mercurial.el' and 'mq.el' are in cwd. I use '-L .' so that mq.el
will succeed with "(require 'mercurial)". Why doesn't it work?

MS Windows quirks

I can't file a bug report since I'm not an MS Windows user. But, I was
helping a colleague setup XEmacs on MS Windows and some things are
peculiar, but I suspect they could be fixed easily. For example,
opening a link file gets you a binary mess. Luckily, the actual
filename is in that mess and you can usually copy and paste it to open
the actual file. Can't that be automated?
Also, when you copy that to the minibuffer, you have to edit whatever
was their already. I guess that's because the absolute path of the
filename starts with <drive-letter>: instead of /, ~ or \ (MS
Windows-only, I assume). Could this also be automated just on MS
Windows? I mean something like...
C-x C-f
minibuffer before: c:\dir\with\link\<cursor>
minibuffer during: c:\dir\with\link\<paste>c:\actual\filename</paste>
minibuffer after : c:\actual\filename<cursor>
So, in other words, the magic symbols would also need to include a regex
something like [a-zA-Z]:
