[Bug: 21.4.19] XEmacs hangs at exit with "No such coding system: iso-2022-8"

(Sorry if this is a duplicate of what I sent directly from XEmacs, but
I've never done e-mail within XEmacs and so have no idea whether my
attempt to send a report directly from there actually worked.)
Dear Bug Team!
I try to exit XEmacs 21.4.19 under Windows XP by either using the main
window close button or menu item File > Exit XEmacs.
The minibuffer shows message
No such coding system: iso-2022-8
and XEmacs will not exit. (The only way I can exit is by using the
Windows Task Manager.)
At first I thought this was caused by AUCTeX, but AUCTeX expert David
Kastrup says the problem is "very clearly an XEmacs-internal" one that
has no particular relation to AUCTeX.
Here's what C-h v kill-emacs-hook RET says:

This kind of crash occurs quite frequently when I'm replying to a mail
in Gnus 5.10.7 with `F'. In this situation I tried to forward a mail

configure.ac contains a check which fails if any other version
of autoconf than 2.59 is used:

To try whether using autoconf 2.60 works, I removed that check
and called
autoconf --force
Unfortunately, m4 runs into an endless loop then.
I have no idea yet why.
On an SXEmacs mailing list I found a patch related to autoconf 2.60:
http://www.sxemacs.org/list-archives/html/sxemacs-patches/2006-03/msg0004...
but this seems to fix an additional, it doesn't help for the endless
loop problem.
Do you have any ideas what the problem with autoconf 2.60 is?

Diverting to xemacs-beta. Evidently SXEmacs has decided to adopt raw
strings, so no point in discussing *there*. SXEmacs folks are more
than welcome to present their opinions on what XEmacs should do, since
you've probably already discussed some of the points I'm concerned
about.
This introduces a serious backward incompatibility with GNU Emacs and
XEmacs 21.4, without adding functionality beyond an attractive
convenience. There is a policy question here, and it should be
discussed (including whether we should be more interested in
compatibility with SXEmacs than GNU Emacs!) before committing IMO.
I'm not going to veto (I like raw strings!), but please give it some
time (a couple weeks, rather than the usual 48 hours) before you
conclude that lack of discussion == tacit approval.

Hi !
I'm trying to give 21.5 a new chance, and I'm running into a problem I think I
had fixed a while back:
I put packages in /usr/local/share instead of /usr/local/lib because that's
where they belong. At some point in 21.5's history, there was the
--with-package-prefix (=/usr/local/share/xemacs) option which allowed me to
change the packages location quite easily.
Now here's the situation with today's CVS:
1/ this option seems to have gone, and it's not advertised by configure --help
either.
2/ I notice that configure.usage still mentions the old version (without the
'with' prefix), and also the old version of --with-package-path. What's
this file still doing here anyway ?
3/ --with-package-path doesn't work the way I want it to. I have not tried it
yet, but I assume it requires a colon separated list of full paths to
packages.
So am I obliged to use
--with-package-path=/usr/local/share/xemacs/site-packages:/usr/local/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages:/usr/local/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages
*again* ?

Killing open buffer causes compile/grep to never reopen it

If you do the following with xemacs 21.5b27 (with latest packages):
Run m-x grep, and use a for a string that appears in a bunch of files.
Hit enter (or whatever you use to activate the line) on one of the
output lines so it jumps to the file/line with the string.
Kill the buffer containing the file it just jumped to.
Try hitting enter again on one of the grep output lines for that file,
and it won't reopen the file, it will just skip to the next file.
In fact, there seems to be no way to force it to reopen the file and
jump to the right place.
This also happens with compiler error messages (so it's a problem in the
underlying generic code)
On the other hand, if you perform this test with fsfmacs, it will simply
reopen the file if it's not open, and again jump to the right place in
the file.
