8859-1 == Chinese should be fixed now. There will be more of these
lurking; code identification is a neural-network kind of thing
(unfortunately without the learning part at this point).
If you get a misidentification, send a bug report with the expected
and actual encodings, the file (if you can legally/ethically do so),
and the value of LANG when you started XEmacs. (There are internal
variables that I should add to M-x report-xemacs-bug, but they're all
defaulted from LANG, and it's a pretty safe bet you don't mess with
them directly.)
Losing encoding information on revert? Please be more specific.

I am happy to have had your help in identifying bugs in the sync, but I
don't understand why you think you have to maintain a distinct local
copy. Can't you just stick with the officially released packages? If
you are installing test packages, then you've agreed to be a tester.
And you've been a good one, so I hope you continue, but you shouldn't
feel like you are required to be a tester.

I don't see anything else in font-lock.el that makes an obtrusive change
to the user's environment.
As for the byte compiling issue, (require 'auto-autoloads) is not the
right thing to do, because there are lots of auto-autoloads.el files,
one per package in fact. It is true that this is just to quiet a byte
compiler warning. That may be considered a small thing by some, but I
try to get rid of such warnings whenever I touch a package. I have this
dream that, eons from now, some XEmacs developer may be able to notice
that there were 2 warnings when compiling the packages and go fix the
problem. Right now, we get so many warnings that they are nearly
worthless.
We could drop the require of font-lock and get the warning back. I'm
not terribly concerned about this, though, because (1) we distribute the
packages in precompiled form, which is good enough for the vast majority
of users; and (2) anybody who needs to compile their own due to
maintaining local variations should be sophisticated enough to deal with
a change in find-file-hooks.

getting vhdl-mode-3.33.16 installed and operating?

I think that I might need to get something like (add-hook
'vhdl-mode-hook 'my-vhdl-mode-hook)
into C:\Documents and Settings\douga\.xemacs\custom.el
on my windows xp machine. Is there a website around that gives the
install steps?
I have the vhdl-mode-3.33.16.tar.gz file on my desktop.

[Bug: 21.5-b25] dired messes up DOS line-encoding handling

Dear Bug Team!
When one loads dired, and afterwards loads a text file with DOS
line-encoding (i.e., with CR-LF endings), the line-encoding is
correctly parsed, but not represented in buffer encoding state. When
the file is changed and written out again, all line-endings have been
converted to LF.
How to create the issue, with the appended file intro-dos.txt:
-- Start
xemacs -vanilla .
-- C-x C-f intro-dos.txt
-- Mode line shows Raw and not Raw:T
-- Change something, C-x C-s
-- Saved file has now LF line-endings.
As always, If I can help any further to track down the problem, I'm
willing to invest more work. But I would need your guidance where to
look -- I don't want to check the whole dired code if it messes
with coding-systems somewhere.

Strange delays when running remotely

Dear Bug Team!
When running Xemacs version 21 remotely (displaying on my local X
server) I have found that any multicharacter kills (such as kill-line,
kill-word, kill-ring-save, etc.) are extremely slow (maybe 15-30
seconds per kill). I only see this delay when I am running over a DSL
connection where the ping times to the remote system are on the order
of 100 milliseconds or more. When my local machine is on the same LAN
as the remote machine (much shorter ping times), I do not notice any
unusual delay in multicharacter kills. I also do not see this problem
when running Xemacs version 20.
My local X server when using the DSL connection is Exceed 3D running
under Microsoft Windows 98SE. When using the LAN, my local X server
is also Exceed 3D but running under Microsoft Windows 2000.

Your change of 2006-10-30 of `configure' committed on 2006/11/16
11:22:26 +0 makes executing `config.status --r' always fail, at least
if some arguments were passed to `configure' that created it. After
that change `configure' contains the following command text.
exec $SHELL "$0"$ac_configure_args \$ac_configure_extra_args --no-create --no-recursion
It is put in `config.status' created by it and executed when `--r'
passed to `config.status'. This attempts to execute nonexistent
`configure$1' file (with `$1' from `configure' arguments) and fails.
Reproducing the broken `configure' contents with re- running autoconf
2.60.
Please fix.

Emacs version: 21.4a. Merged from emacs 21 to xemacs 21.5 with the
same bug, so cross- posting there.
`beginning-of-line' (in emacs only: another inconsistency of the
merge), `forward-paragraph' and many other commands by default refuse
to move across field boundaries. It is not even stated so in their
docstings, for `forward-paragraph' at least.
Other commands on top of them are also affected by that, and in an
obscure way. Viper vi state `f' command operate within paragraph
boundary as determined by `forward-paragraph' (which is also not
documented), and if the boundary is before the end of line due to
fields, then characters on that line are not found as expected.
It actually happens with default settings of `shell-mode', if point is
in shell prompt and character to find is in command being edited,
which are different fields set up by `comint'.
There is even no interactive commands to check for fields explicitly.
All of the field limiting only overloads existing point movement
commands. Some packages may set different faces for different fields,
like `comint' does (using `comint-highlight-prompt' face), or may set
nothing except fields themselves. It is entirely up to package. And
even if face with different foreground color (or other visual
attributes) is set, differences between it and text outside the field
may be visible or not visible on particular display / terminal.
(With xemacs `comint.el' after revision 1.14 of 2006/05/25 it is even
more complex. `comint-highlight-prompt' is used only for
`font-lock-face' extent property, so there is an additional unknown of
whether font lock mode is on. It is also not typical use of font lock
to denote otherwise hidden text areas across which regular editing
commands will refuse to move, and thus required in this case.
Normally it is used for syntax structures which may be easily
recognized otherwise, across which editing commands move freely, and
thus optional.)
Generally user has to resort to evaluating elisp expressions to figure
what is going on. Or, in emacs, work around it all by setting
`inhibit-field-text-motion t' locally. Can not do so in xemacs due to
bug in its comint.
For these reasons considering lack of interactive commands to check
for field boundaries a bug. These commands should do the same
regardless of minor modes, faces attributes and display capabilities
in particular emacs process.
Explicit error messages about hitting field boundary would be even
better.
** Why still report for emacs 21.
Limiting movements to fields as described appeared in 21 release
branch only, as 1999-10-17 Miles Bader <miles(a)gnu.org> change.
If users could have noticed that and complained about that in that
time, it would be reasonable now to recommend them just to switch to
new development branch from release 21 one. But at that time emacs
cvs was not publicly readable. Such a recommendation would be at best
unreasonable. It signals that now it is <too late> to complain about
release 21 bugs. Until 21 release, it was <too early> to do so. When
there was time to do so, then?
