I have the free MS compiler, I just didn’t happen to be at work on a Windows
box over the weekend :-) . GCC triggers a warning on that problem; it’s not
Windows-specific. I’ll commit this this evening:

I haven’t. You don’t say which version of XEmacs you’re trying to install,
but it may be that configuring with --disable-pdump will get you a working
xemacs binary; otherwise, send us the error messages you get.
There are ancient AIX binaries available here:
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/xemacs/binaries/aix/
but the XEmacs version is also ancient, so I would recommend trying to
compile a more recent version and posting the error messages you receive
here.

They’re already commented out--they’re just commentary on GNU Emacs’
approach to implementing Unicode. I’ve replaced them with a clearer
description of GNU’s approach and how ours differs.

I did an indent-region on the file, then restored the docstrings to where
they were initially. There are a few changes that resulted from that, but
not many--hopefully I didn’t miss the reformatting you wanted.
Anyway, as you many have deduced, I’ve committed that change. Comments on
incompatibilities and reports of bugs it introduces are encouraged.

Unfortunately, this patch broke starting a cygwin XEmacs started from
a cmd window. Here's how to reproduce the problem from Windows:
1. Build and install a cygwin version of XEmacs. In this example,
we'll assume it gets installed to /usr/local/bin/xemacs
2. bring up cmd (not a cygwin shell)
3. in that cmd window, type the following
run /usr/local/bin/xemacs
4. the XEmacs window will not appear on the screen or on the taskbar.
If you start gnuserv in your startup file, you can use gnuclient to
pop up a window.
Reverting your patch fixes this problem.
Do you have a Windows environment to test in? If you need help
testing a possible solution, I'm happy to provide my assistance.

It can avoid the ‘entirely inappropriate pattern for the given charset’
aspect, and that is important. Remember that the existing API says nothing
about _where_ the charset-registry pattern matches; "courier" is an
appropriate value for it.

Agreed, I don’t propose backporting anything to 21.4. But my understanding
is that the cache works; the performance problems are a result of the design
being heinous, not any implementation bug. What makes you think the cache
doesn’t work, if that is your understanding?

The results are cached, but to get a result, XListFonts may be called an
insane number of times, often, as mentioned, with an entirely inappropriate
pattern for the given charset. This is as expected, and can’t be avoided
with regex charset-registry fields.
