For me, the resizing problem seems to be related to the custom-set-faces directive in custom.el. (custom-set-faces '(default ((t (:size "12pt" :family "Fixed"))) t)) If I comment it out, I get a window that starts at the correct dimensions and remains so. With the directive in place, my window starts the correct size and then shrinks. I am curious about whether or not the problem persists for you if you comment out your custom-set-faces directive. Also, for additional frames spawned using C-x 5 f, the resizing problem does not occur for subsequent windows. I would like to know if you see this as well. I would be interested to know if you observe the same behavior that I am seeing. (My window changes in height as well as width, but I attribute that to my selecting a font family with a different height than the default, which I believe you are not doing.) Any information you could provide me would be helpful. After much investigation, I don't see how this could be a window manager problem, and I'm still trying to find an explanation. bug report: UTF-8 encoding support 18 years, 6 months

Dear fellow developers, I am using Xemacs 21.5.17 beta "chayote" on Windows XP, and the SINGLE MAJOR PROBLEM for me is the lame support for UTF-8 encoding. I live in Latvia and I use UTF-8 latvian diacritical characters all the time. However, Xemacs only recognizes file encoding as UTF-8 if there are first 2 UTF-8 bytes set at the beginning of file, or if there are already latvian UTF-8 encoded characters in the file. Otherwise, when I create a new file, or add a diacritical letter to existing UTF-8 file, there is no way for me to switch Xemacs encoding mode to UTF-8. The only thing that I learned to work around this is "save the file as UTF-8" in Notepad, which inserts UTF-8 prefix characters at the beginning of the file, after which Xemacs recognizes the file as UTF-8. Would anyone, please, make a simple Xemacs function to switch the file encoding to UTF-8, or, even better, to make UTF-8 default encoding for all files? Regards, Eduard

[PATCH] Make GC dependent on % of total memory consed 18 years, 6 months

This one I'm not committing quite yet, as it is a (somewhat) user-visible change. I'm interested in comments. With this change, GC will not happen until at least 40% (a random guess) of current Lisp-object memory has been allocated. The purpose of this is to make GC time be a constant amortized percentage of total run time, regardless of how big XEmacs is. (Currently, GC time will become a progressively larger percent of total time as the size of XEmacs increases.) This facility, while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly. To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" -> "Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
