(folding-fold-region): auctex:latex-mode's
`indent-according-to-mode' causes bottom fold to indent 50
characters forward. Added check to prevent that. Bug reported
by Uwe Brauer; oub A T mat dot ucm dot es.
(folding-check-folded): Added check for \r character, which
signifies collapsed folds. This fixes bug (C-x s) where buffer's folds
were forced to closed state if folding mode was active in some other
buffer. Function `folding-mode-write-file' did that, but the
impulse came from `folding-check-folded'.

Wishful thinking. The POSIX locale concept is fundamentally broken in
a multilingual context, that's all there is to it. Even with the GNU
"local locale" extensions. Minimize changes to the environment and
make sure they're internally consistent, yes. But as long as a
multilingual application may find itself calling non-multilingual
programs, the only way it has to deal with the issue is to change the
locale.
Even the character set: consider the persistent breakage of Dired when
people have LANG set.

Yes. That is another bug in POSIX, I think. I guess you could hack
around it by parsing all LC_* variables found in the environment.

Like I said, POSIX locales are just plain broken. Consider the
sort(1) problem:

I'm not saying we won't try to deal with this. I understand why the
Open Group found themselves forced into this position, and XEmacs is
too dependent on external processes for various services to take some
high-handed attitude that we are going to wait for the rest of the
world to do multilingual processing. But it's not easy to handle
POSIX rules without punting on "multilingual".

[Bug: 21.4.15] PUI package update not usable without Norbert's public key

Dear Bug Team!
When I execute #'package-get-update-base or #'pui-list-packages (via
menu "Tools / Packages / Update Package Index" or "Tools / Packages /
List and Install"), I get the message
Can't check signature: Public key 82EDF2C1D1DD84CD not found
Installation is not possible, PUI does not appear.
As you can see from the transcript below, I use GPG and mailcrypt
discovers this. PGP is not installed. This is xemacs -vanilla; no
personal configuration.
I would propose to publish on the XEmacs Web site that this is
Norbert's key that one needs to install. Or that one can fetch that
key from a keyserver. (Or that one can turn on autofetching with GPG,
though I don't know if that's a good general recommendation.)
In addition, Norbert's key should be put on the XEmacs ftp server, in
/ftp/pub/xemacs/pgp-keys/.
In particular, the `Quickstart Package Guide' web page says that one
might `get some question about keys to fetch or whether to use the
index without verifying the signature.' No such question appears when
one uses GPG. (I could not check what happens if one uses PGP.) The
`XEmacs Installation HOWTO' should also be adapted.
I can write up one or two paragraphs for these two web pages if that
helps you. I can only cover GPG, though. (I read xemacs-beta, you can
answer there.)

With XEmacs 21.5.x, it appears to be impossible to start a process in
an UTF-8 locale and give non-ASCII text as command line arguments.
This is very annoying, no external program works correctly
anymore if a non-ASCII command line is needed. For example
M-x grep
doesn't work anymore when grepping for non-ASCII and playing .mp3
files with mpg123.el doesn't work anymore if the filenames are
non-ASCII because they are given as arguments to the external mpg123
program.
A small lisp file start-process-bug.el to show the problem is
attached.
When trying this test file with XEmacs 21.5.18, the result is as
follows (should better be tried in an UTF-8 capable environment to see
the output correctly):

I.e. the letter 'A' has arrived correctly but the hiragana 'あ' has
been converted into a '~' and the ä has been written as Latin1 and not
UTF-8.
This used to work with XEmacs 21.4.x. Trying the same test with XEmacs
21.4.15 gives the following result:

21.4.16 activated region bug?

When I activate a region, then press an unshifted motion key, the region
expands or
contracts accordingly. However, I have
unshifted-motion-keys-deselect-region
set to t, so I believe this behavior is a bug. I'm using 21.4.16 on
Solaris 9 compiled with
GCC 3.3.4. Not sure what other information might help. Anyone have an
idea what
is wrong?
