Naming fonts when using the GTK+ toolkit

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I can't find it...
How do I specify the default face in my ~/.Xdefaults file if I
compiled with GTK+ toolkit?
(I know how to and can successfully set the default face in my
initialization file, or I can use the Options:Font menu item.)
This doesn't work:
Emacs.default.attributeFont: -bitstream-bitstream vera sans mono-medium-r-normal-*-*-70-*-*-m-*-iso8859-15
I also tried
Font
fontSet
FontSet
and
XEmacs
in the appropriate parts of the font description.

Are you using desktop.el or something like that, with largish files?
That might trigger the progress-bar crash, which seems to be due to
improper initialization of the progress widget's Label parent.
Anyway, try turning off progress bars in init.el:

I think that is fontconfig, not XEmacs. I get Courier if I don't set
something else.
If you're going to try to get actual work done, I recommend setting
X resources for
XEmacs.default.attributeFont:
XEmacs.modeline.attributeFont:
XEmacs*menubar*font:
XEmacs*Tabs*xftFont:
Note that the first two are _face_ resources, while the latter two are
_widget_ resources. Also note the use of "xftFont" for Tabs widgets.
This will go away later.

Again, I don't see this. Unfortunately, fontconfig prefers to return
something (anything!) if you use the convenience interface, and
doesn't provide a useful status value in that case. So the next thing
I'm going to do is to provide better functions for looking at the
actual font instance than we currently have.

[Bug: 21.5-b18] Missing colon in local variables entry

Dear Bug Team!
I am not sure this is a bug or whether I should ask for a feature request. I
am trying to set up a file so that it runs a func when loaded which hides
local variables, but I get the backtrace at the end of this message. Here
are the local variables (^L is actually \014 in the file):

If I remove (goto-char pos), I do not get the error. I verified that pos is
before the last page.
I note there are lisp shadows from mule. Those appeared with the latest version
update (21.5.17->21.5.18). The files in
/Users/royar/usr/local/lib/xemacs/mule-packages/lisp/mule-base
appear to be newer (newer (c)) than those in
/Users/royar/usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.5-b18/lisp/mule/

Hi,
The package smoketest currently fails, (in different mysterious ways), when trying
to format ".../tm/texi/tm-ja.info". As I get it texinfmt is used for the real hard
cases that makeinfo can't handle.
However there seemes to be at least two problems at the moment. When run from make
a load path is set that doesn't include all packages that texinfmt needs and futher
texinfmt itself doesn't require all packages it uses either.
Could someone please have a look at this so that it will get a proper fix.

Dear Bug Team!
I am having a problem with CR+LF "implicit translations" in
my XEmacs native Windows installation.
Here is the story. I received a file created by someone
using (probably) Word. When I look at the hex dump of the
file I see the usual 0d0a combination (carriage return /
line feed).
I then open the file in XEmacs, make a small change, and
save the file: the hex-dump now shows all the 0d0a
combinations replaced by 0d0d!
To compound the problem, the 0d's are "suppressed" in the
display: if I search for control-M I get no hits.
I hope this gives you enough info, and thanks for your help.

Because of the way XEmacs (and every other Emacsen, AFAIK) is built. The
link gives you a bare-boned emacs (called temacs). temacs is then run,
preloading some of the lisp files. The result is then dumped into a new
executable, named xemacs, which will contain all of the preloaded lisp
functions and data.
Now, during the dump itself, the executable (code+data+symbols) is
written on disk using a special unexec() function. This function is
obviously heavily system dependent. And on some systems, it leads to an
executable which, although valid, cannot be stripped without damage. If
memory serves, this is especially the case for AIX binaries. On other
architectures it might work OK.
The Right Way to strip the emacs binary is to strip temacs prior to
dumping xemacs. This will always work, although you can do that only if
you install from sources (as temacs is ＠file{not} part of the binary
kits).

Answer: No, but you can start Netscape before XEmacs, and it will use
the closest available color if the colormap is full. You can also limit

map).
If you have the money, another solution would be to use a truecolor or
direct color video.

debugging Mailman pipeline on XEmacs Beta (CC stripping)

I'm debugging the Mailman pipeline for the CC stripping stuff on
xemacs-beta. (It probably affects all the Mailman lists, but XEmacs
Beta is the only one that gets enough traffic to be visible.)
I don't expect any impact on either xemacs-beta readers or tux.org
operations, beyond appending to the trace logs on the mail host. It
should not be visible in any way.
But I've been wrong before. If you do notice something odd, please
let us know at xemacs-mailmaint(a)xemacs.org (or reply to this message,
Reply-To is set).
