[Bug: 21.4.10] `own-selection' with region active

Dear Bug Team!
I evaluated `(own-selection "foo")' while the region was active, and
"foo" was not put on the window system clipboard. I expected to see
"foo" on the window system clipboard.
The erroneous behaviour seems equivalent to that resulting from
evalling `(disown-selection)' instead.
To reproduce:
Fire up xemacs (with `-vanilla').
Type:
( o w n - s e l e c t i o n SPACE " f o o " ) C-SPACE C-x C-e
Then paste (middle-click under X, e.g.). Whatever was on the
clipboard before starting up XEmacs is inserted into the buffer,
instead of the expected "foo".

Dear Bug Team!
I obtained re-builder.el from
http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/\
emacs/emacs/lisp/emacs-lisp/re-builder.el
To my ~/.xemacs/init.el I added:
(require 're-builder)
Subsequently xemacs stops with "Malformed list: :background" when run.
I am very much a lisp novice, but if there is any other test I could
run please let me know.

Dear Bug Team!
find-dired does not work correctly.
I've seen this bug reported before and also seen a promised fos for
the bug but so far the problem persists. I also believe that dired is
not a formal part of XEmacs, but that you guys want the same
functionallity as GNU Emacs. The problem happens when you run
find-dired, each line of the output can be selected with the cursor,
except the last line. This means that I can 'navigate' to each file
realy easily, except for the last file.
Any help, patches, fixes would be much appreciated

He already did, that's why this is happening. I QUERY'd the patch,

Build problem with MSVC6 on Windows XP Pro

A while back (March 2003) I reportd a problem with building XEmacs
21.5 on Windows XP. The details are in a thread entitled "Error if
locale is omitted in set-progress-feedback-instantiator" which is
available in the list archives.
I have no further idea where the bug may lie, but I have now upgraded
my main machine to Windows XP, and so my access to Windows 2000 is
fairly limited. I do not have MSVC 7, and have no prospect of getting
it (it costs too much for me to get it for personal use, and my
employer isn't getting it). I am therefore wondering if there is any
alternative way of getting Windows binaries for XEmacs betas.
Possibilities include:
1. Does anybody distribute prebuilt beta binaries?
2. Can a native XEmacs be built with Mingw (gcc)?
I don't do much XEmacs development, but I have run with the beta
versions for a while now. If there's no chance of getting binaries,
I'll stick with 21.5.14 until the next stable release (22.0?)
Obviously, this isn't going to be a high priority for anyone, but I
didn't want to give up before I at least asked...

Oh, of course, you're right about that. But they could also be
rewritten in Lisp; most of them are in shell because that was quick
and dirty and there was no particular reason to rewrite them when they
were in core lib-src (which many of them were).

If EFS doesn't fall into this category, what does? From the point of
view of core, because of the dependency on EFS for package install
transport, it is the single biggest headache in the packages. What
with Microsoft and Red Hat (not to mention various commercial Unix
vendors) ftp can't even be considered a "standard" system binary. :-/

Well, that was done with release of 21.4.12. But I'll put something
up on the website in a prominent place soon. Probably I'll just let
fly with "what I think is the review board's sense of best practice"
and label it "Request for Comments".
Does that make sense, or should I be more cautious (ie, a formal patch
and review process) until we have an agreed policy in place? The
reason I'd like to do it that way is that (1) this is different from
past policy and AFAIK GNU's policy, which is to reserve flexibility
for the core team---it's worth making that public, and (2) although
the sense of commitment to backwards compatibility is agreed (I
think), details probably aren't. I think details should be resolved
in a back-and-forth between the reivew board, developers, and third
party maintainers.
So the sense of the RFC would be "if you see a package or core feature
your package depends on going 'the wrong way', speak up so we can
answer and clarify the commitment."

Steve,
I copied this from somwhere else as a template. That means it's "wrong" in a
few places. Can you check os-utils for me since that is also a new .texi
file from me? I don't think I have commit access there. It's also wrong
wherever I took it from but I don't remember what that is (edit-utils,
maybe?)

Deprecate use of GNU DLD

GNU DLD is a dynamic link library. It is not maintained (the last
release was in 1996), it's crufty (see the complaints about it in
sysdll.c), nobody is using it for module support (see
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-patches/200307/msg00103.html for
evidence), and I don't know how to maintain it since I don't have any
systems with DLD, nor do I know anybody with such a system.
I would like to deprecate GNU DLD for the next release of 21.5 and
consider removing support for it entirely in 21.6 or 22.0, whichever
comes next. Are there any objections?
