I've just added initial support for the Euro (and a half-dozen other
characters) by adding
the latin-iso8859-15 charset (ISO Latin-9)
the iso-8859-15 coding system (ISO 8859/15 and ISO IRV 203)
the latin-9 language environment
to 21.5 CVS (check out the bleeding edge with update -A).
Yes, I'm inclined to apply to 21.4, but I'd like it to be more
complete and somewhat tested first. ;-)
I need advice on
(1) what, if anything, to do about the XK_EuroSign keysym for X
(I know you can
(global-set-key [EuroSign]
(lambda () (interactive)
(insert (make-char 'latin-iso8859-15 #xA4)))
but does there need to be a default binding? Is that the right
one? Should it be activated by the language environment? etc)
(2) any other non-Quail input methods for the Euro and additional
characters
(3) I want to make Quail latin-9-prefix and -postfix methods
compatible with the latin-1 methods. I need suggestions for
keystroke bindings for the following characters:
U+20AC euro sign
U+0160 latin capital letter s with caron
U+0161 latin small letter s with caron
U+017D latin capital letter z with caron
U+017E latin small letter z with caron
U+0152 latin capital ligature oe
U+0153 latin small ligature oe
U+0178 latin capital letter y with diaeresis
French and Finnish speakers, this one's for you!
(4) plausible aliases for the language environment
(5) did I get the ISO 2022 final byte correct? (ISO IRV 203 says it's
?b, ie, ASCII 0x62.)
(6) What else did I miss?
Please note that the Gnus in the XEmacs packages seems to be broken;
it will not do QP-encoding of ISO 8859/15 (or ISO 8859/any, for any !=
1) correctly. Not for me, anyway (it just doesn't know anything about
XEmacs, period). I haven't tried VM yet.
The following form may be of use:
(insert (make-char 'latin-iso8859-15 #xA4))
That should give you a Euro sign (eg in *scratch*) out of the box in
xemacs -vanilla.

Last April I reported a problem building cc-align.el using a non-Mule
21.4 on my Linux box; see

I promised to look into this if I got time, and lo and behold, a mere
10 months later I decided to investigate. The traceback can be
consistently reproduced here at home; I have used a very stripped down
XEmacs to speed up rebuilding and to help in isolating the failure:

Using dmalloc and repeatedly calling dmalloc_verify(0) in gdb, I was
able to isolate the failure somewhat. The specpdl gets overwritten in
the function execute_optimized_program() on the 4th time through this
code:

If I go back to funcall_compiled_function(), which calls
execute_optimized_program(), I see:

In this case, f->specpdl_depth is 5, and if I increase it to 6
before calling SPECPDL_RESERVE, no crash occurs, because the size of
specpdl is increased before calling execute_optimized_program().
2 questions:
1. In this case, optimize_compiled_function() is not called, so does
anything guarantee that "f->specpdl_depth is the required space
on the specbinding stack for binding the args and local variables
of fun"?
2. Did the bytecompiler just make a mistake in calculating the
specpdl depth required for the specified function?
Can anyone help here? I'm slightly out of my depth in messing with
the bytecode interpreter, but I'm happy to continue investigating if
anyone can give me a gentle nudge in the right direction.

call for help: updating the packages so they can be enabled and disabled

one of the primary things i want to add to 21.5 is "behaviors". some support is
already there but i want to generalize it and get all packages encompassed in
it. the basic idea is that it provides a uniform interface onto enabling and
disabling a behavior (usually a package), setting the associated variables,
getting help as to how the behavior works, etc. this would be done through a
simple menu-oriented system. this makes is very easy for users to try out
what's out there, which now is just utter chaos.
i'm in the process of adding `define-behavior' statements [bracketed with if
fboundp, don't worry] for all the packages in `edit-utils'. there's a snafu,
though: many of the packages are enabled merely by loading, and can't be
disabled. even for those that provide an explicit enable function, there's
often no disable function. i need help modifying these packages to provide
these enable and disable functions. it doesn't matter exactly what they're
called, just that they do the work. you might consider synching up to the
latest released version while you're at it, to see if those functions got
written for you already. also, you should use `advice' whenever possible to
advise functions rather than homegrown hacks like just changing the functions
and storing the old value in a variable.
anyone willing to help? any contributions would be greatly appreciated and
would go a long way towards making XEmacs a far more useful and user-friendly
program.
another possible project, for someone with more energy: create an advice-like
system for key bindings. it should simplify and stabilize the process of
packages modifying key bindings. just like for the regular advice, they should
be able to call the original binding from their modified routine, and all the
nastiness of de-installation should be taken care of. [e.g. if package a advises
a key, and then package b advises the same key, then b will have advised a's
advising of the key. if package a then uninstalls, the key should be left with
b advising the original definition.]

BUG REPORT: "pending-del.el"

Hi,
I gave the `kill-line' symbol a property of 'kill for 'pending-delete.
After the region is killed, "pending-delete" attempts to deactivate the
region, but of course buffer modification deactivates the region
automatically, leading to an error. I've got a patch (see atached), I don't
know if it's too simplistic, though. I'm no lisp expert.
