Well, I've tried working on all of them, and it _does_ add complexity,
at least given my skills. Much of the complexity is because the Xft
stuff is not properly abstracted, but rather #ifdef'd into place.
This would fit naturally with improvements in face and font
description.

No, I don't. It's the other way around. Sorry; that's the point of
having a review process. If you can convince others to lean on me,
that works too. But you have to do the convincing, at this point.

Yes. One that should be at least in the _design review stage_ before
your patch is accepted for 21.5. As I say, I feel your pain.

"Two-octet unicode" was a mistake. Yuri/Aleksey's patch uses UTF-8.
The problem is the same, however. X11 historically just pukes if you
feed it data it doesn't expect. Routines that call into X without
doing range-checking on the arguments are simply crashes waiting to
happen. Do you know what happens if an illegal character is given for
one of those fonts? If you do, please document it. (Note that you
may not assume at this point that the Mule routines themselves know
what they are doing---anything can get passed into Xft: illegal
characters, mal-formed UTF-8, and you either have to know the Xft will
gracefully signal an error so you can catch it, or catch the bad data
yourself.)

Actually, I was rather disappointed. But we have different viewpoints.
But you're saying you _have_ tried several of these desirable things,
failed, don't know why---and still you claim you see no additional
complexity? Think again; are you kidding yourself?

Not if someone doesn't push for it to happen. It does need to happen,
or XEmacs will lose users that it really should have.

Ben has some ideas that are related, Hrvoje has some ideas
specifically along these lines, I have some ideas. If there are
features in the queue that are waiting, we'll have more incentive to
turn them into "plans", and those who have features they want in will
help us to design something that works for everybody.

You don't fix design breakage in no time at all.

Yeah. You put on your waders, step into the muck, start shoveling,
and several hours or days later you have a merged workspace. Even in
free software, not everything can be fun. Not all patches should be
merged. Etc.

You'll notice I haven't issued a formal veto, yet. All I want at this
stage is to talk about the issues before we commit something that
really looks fishy to me, precisely because you're not interested in
addressing any of the fundamental breakage.
Your patch is perfectly appropriate for 21.6. I proposed that quite a
while ago, and it was vetoed by the same people who don't like
branches. Maybe we should revive it. Or maybe you can get Vin to
take it.

Everybody likes candy. Too much of it and you get far more friendly
with your dentist than is good for your wallet, not to mention painful.

[REQUEST] xemacs-users-ru list archive on XEmacs site displays non-ascii subjects in more readable fasion

XEmacs.org stores archives of xemacs-users-ru. Most articles on the list have
their subjects in koi8-r.
The subjects are displayed 'as is', without processing. Concider for exmaple
the subject:
XEmacs =?koi8-r?b?yQ==?= `coding' file variable
It would be great if xemacs.org archives recognise and present rfc 2047
encoded headers in the specified encoding. An image is attached to the article
that shows how the example subject should look like.

Dear Bug Team!
XEmacs crashes repeatedly whenever I edit java code and add code
like follows:
If the code is like
# CODE
if (<some condition>)
do something;
# CODE
and I change it to something like adding a simple else statement:
# CODE
if (<some condition>)
do something;
else
# CODE
The moment I hit return after "else" or hit spacebar after that, it
crashes. This doesn't always happen but sometimes its quite frequent.
The only way is to add some other code and then delete it later.

Compiling for Cygwin [again]

After a long hiatus. Trying once again to build
"xemacs-r21-5-latest-beta" (2003-11-17).
Environment is the very latest in Cygwin tools, GCC 3.3.1 (cygming special)
Discovered that many options not fully supported lead to the kind of
messy trash I got before when the
compiler is handed the stuff from which the final Makefile('s) are
created: complaints about invalid tokens.
I thought, however, that I had trimmed things down far enough except
that it fails looking for undefined
symbol "_WinMain＠16". SEE ATTACHED CLIPPING FROM CONFIGURE.LOG
I know what _WinMain＠16 is supposed to be. A Cygwin program shouldn't
have one. To me this looks
like the wrong runtime initializer is being called in ( crt0.o ?,
crtinit.o ? -- whatever ).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The following XEmacs packages have just been released. Most of the
packages have been updated due to maintenance issues.
I'm happy to introduce a new package riece a successor to liece, ie an
IRC client you can use from your favourite editor. Please note that
liece is now marked as deprecated and will be removed sometime in the
future.
There are known bugs in the current version of latin-unity. We're
working on it. Stay tuned to xemacs-beta for upcoming versions.

* cc-engine.el (c-guess-continued-construct,
c-guess-basic-syntax): Check a little more carefully if it's a
function declaration when an unknown construct followed by a block
is found inside a statement context. This avoids macros followed
by blocks to be taken as function declarations.
(c-guess-continued-construct): Changed the analysis of a statement
continuation with a brace open to `substatement-block', for
consistency with recognized statements.
(c-add-stmt-syntax): Don't continue to the surrounding sexp if the
start is in a position so that `c-beginning-of-statement-1' jumped
to the beginning of the same statement.

* cc-fonts.el, cc-engine.el (c-forward-<>-arglist-recur): Don't
accept binary operators in the arglist if we're in a function call
context, i.e. if `c-restricted-<>-arglists' is set. That avoids
template recognition in cases like "if (a < b || c > d)".
(c-restricted-<>-arglists): New more appropriate name for
`c-disallow-comma-in-<>-arglists'.

labels.
(c-backward-to-decl-anchor): Use `c-beginning-of-statement-1'
instead of duplicating parts of it. This fixes bogus label
recognition.
* cc-align.el (c-gnu-impose-minimum): Reverted to the old method
of checking the context in which to apply the minimum indentation,
so that it isn't enforced in e.g. namespace blocks.
* cc-vars.el (c-inside-block-syms): New constant used by
`c-gnu-impose-minimum'. It's defined close to `c-offsets-alist'
to somewhat reduce the risk of becoming stale.
* cc-cmds.el, cc-engine.el (c-shift-line-indentation): Moved from
cc-cmds to cc-engine to allow use from cc-align.

1) Download the packages that you want to install from:
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
