Dear Bug Team!
I am using cygwin 1.3.19-1, and after upgrading cygwin and xemacs,
xemacs does not report files as read only when they are. If I open
a file which has cygwin permissions -r-xr-xr-x the file shows up as
writable. When I save to it xemacs is detecting that it is read-only.
Here are my mounts:

Hi,
The rcs2log that is distributed with XEmacs hasn't been
updated for a long time, and has a potential tmp file race
issue, which was fixed in Emacs 21.1 and cvs-1.11.2 in 2001.
It would be good if the copy shipped with XEmacs could also
be updated to fix this issue. I hear the issue appeared on
bugtraq last year apparently.
Below is a pointer to the Emacs changelog entry for
reference, though I guess it would probably be better just
to sync it with the master copy in Emacs.

Dear Bug Team!
On my Mandrake 9.0 system, dired occassionally includes the date as
part of the file name in creating the extents. (It's easy to see when
this happens by sliding the mouse down the filenames and watching the
highlighting.) This means none of the file operations (such as
visiting or deleting) work because they try to operate on a file with
a name like "Apr 23 2002 dired-mob.elc" rather than "dired-mob.elc".
I tracked this down to the search for dired-re-month-and-time, which
is set to

Dear Bug Team!
I just installed Xemacs 21.4 on Win2k, and do not have
a "HOME" environment variable set as mentioned in
http://www.xemacs.org/Documentation/21.5/html/xemacs-faq_7.html#SEC279
When I attempted to "Save options to init file", it was trying
to create a file on o:, a drive which does not exist on my system!
As soon as I created the HOME environment variable as mentioned
in the above FAQ article, it correctly tried to save the config
to the desired location.

I wonder if the following makes sense. Is it possible to dump an xemacs
with a bunch of .el files so that it will behave as a standalone
application? This to minimize the number of files to pack, and prevent
people to play with them. Anybody already did that? Specific things to
pay attention to?

Second attempt at syntax highlighting crash

Here is another shot at the syntax highlighting crash problem. Once
again, I launched XEmacs as "xemacs emacs.c" (in the XEmacs source
tree), selected Options -> Syntax Highlighting -> In This Buffer, and
then selected it again immediately. Then boom.
The C backtrace still has the "??" bits; as you can see I ran
./configure with "--debug" and "--error-checking=all". When I strip the
binary, it gets smaller by a factor of about 3.5, so the binary was
definitely not stripped when the crash happened. Something else weird
must be happening, but I have no clue.

Two distinct modifier keys (such as Meta and Hyper) cannot generate
the same modifier bit, because Emacs won't be able to tell which
modifier was actually held down when some other key is pressed. It

Today on my Win2K machine at work, I opened a file containing the
following lines:

"WTF?", I thought. After checking the relevant variables, I went to
the source, and lo and behold, in files.el I found the following hunk
of code:

Eventually, I found that I could tweak the value of nt-fake-unix-uid,
which defaults to 0 (effectively root). From nt.c:
*Set uid returned by `user-uid' and `user-real-uid'.
Under NT and 9x, there is no uids, and even no almighty user called root.
By setting this variable, you can have any uid of choice. Default is 0.
Changes to this variable take effect immediately.
Now, I understand why we disable local-eval when we're running as
root, but is there any really compelling reason why by default we
should not do local-eval under Windows? I have solved my problem by
setting nt-fake-unix-uid, but won't many new windows users stumble
across this problem?
Do you think I should:
a) change the default value of nt-fake-unix-uid
b) put an explicit note in the docstring of enable-local-eval
explaining this Windoze Weirdness(TM), or
c) do nothing
I'm open to suggestions.

Oops, thanks, Steve.
But what are those modules good for anyway? "cvs co gnus" just gives me
the gnus package, which of course won't even build without the rest of
the packages stuff.
Is it supposed to just be a shorthand for "cvs co -d gnus
XEmacs/packages/xemacs-packages/gnus"? If yes, IMHO it's not worth the
maintenance.
