I'm hoping to make a go of using the UTF functionality which currently exists
in XEmacs. I hope it will support what I'm attempting without too much
difficulty. I'm working mostly with English, German, Old Norse, and API.
I've discovered when I open a file which I created with Old Norse (Modern
Icelandic) characters, XEmacs treats it as Chinese. This can be a real
problem. Is there a way I can work around this? I'm looking at the
available functions, and trying to determine what to put in my
~/.xemacs/init.el so that XEmacs guesses correctly when I open files. I also
want all my files to be opened and saved as UTF-8.
I don't know the significance of this, but there is at least one character
which is UFT-32 which I would like to be able to use. Does that mess up
everything?
I'm back to working on my treaties entitled _A Critique of Pure XEmacs. It's
something I started some months ago, but never had much time to dedicate to
it. I now have a bit of time for the project. There isn't much here yet.

This does indeed show extra echoing.
running ftp in an xterm and typing commands by hand doesn't show extra
echoing.
running ftp in an xterm with input from a file doesn't show extra

I'm running the standard ftp client, on a pretty standard FreeBSD
system. I've done a lot of xemacs customization in elisp, but
(famous last words) None of it should affect an ftp buffer.
That said, any idea of what I did to affect the ftp buffer?

This will most likely be rejected, but if it starts some activity on
efs then that will be enough.
Ever since I switched to xemacs, I've had problems with efs that I
never saw with ange-ftp under fsf emacs.
The main problem is getting:
``Unable to identify remote host type''
errors. The happens perhaps 1 in 5 times when I first use efs.
Less often is a writable file being fetched as read-only.
Even less often is a directory being fetched instead of the desired
file.
I'm pretty sure that the first error is caused by efs getting out of
sync with the ftp process. It is not unreasonable to believe that
this could be the cause of the other errors, too.
The contents of an ftp buffer in which the first kind of error occurs
follows:

There is definitely a timing problem. In this trace you can see that
the hash command is sent before the ftp program has issued its prompt
after the progress off command. (the progress off command is also sent
out of sync but that is non-fatal)
Here is what then happens:
efs-process-filter matches "^ftp> " and chews it off. Then
efs-process-handle-line matches
``Hash mark printing on (1024 bytes/hash mark).'' when it uses
"^[Hh]ash$" to detect the results of the hash command.
Efs now thinks the hash command is done. It isn't and we're out of
sync. The hash mark size is never determined, and subsequent commands
also get incorrect responses. Efs gets confused and errors out.
Simply putting messages inside the "^ftp>" chewer slows things enough
to "fix" the bug, so the timing is pretty close.
Chewing ftp prompts, as mentioned in some comments, does not fix the
out of sync condition.
What I've tried to do is make things really synchronous by waiting for
the ftp prompt after non-async commands. However, efs is a tad
complex, so I'm not sure what I've done is correct. This patch
does let me do hundreds of efs edits without any errors.
If anyone who knows more about efs could look at this I would
appreciate it.
Since I've become a telecommuter, efs has become essential in getting
my work done.
I'm also very curious to know if anyone else has seen errors like these.

When I try to open the "M" or "jinmei"-file, it works. But trying to

bzip2-process (which just does nothing).

I believe there may be a way to declare a list of priorities. After I get

Hard copy. It's Latin Extended B 01EA, and 01EB. You can find it on the

There are fonts for for most characters I want to use. I have input methods
for many of them, but these are not necessarily pleasant.
I've found looking at the following files to be a bit instructive:

They are off my SuSE box. I'm pretty sure they are the prodocut of XFree86.
Mozilla does a pretty good job with these. XEmacs handles many of the fonts,
but it requiered a bit of persuasion.

Dear Bug Team!
I am running Xemacs-21-4-9 ( \i586-pc-win32\ ) on Windows NT 4.0.
If I select a file "LongFileName.vhd", then right-click and
do Send-To -> Xemacs, then:
1. Xemacs starts and opens the file "correctly"
(i.e., the file is not corrupted in any way).
2. Xemacs converts the file name to the 8 character prefix
MS-DOS format "LongFi~1.vhd".
3. If I save any changes to the file, the file is
stored as : "LongFi~1.vhd"
I find this a bit annoying, and hope the problem can be
fixed in some soon-to-come Xemacs releases for Windows.
(Actually, if there is a "LongDirectoryName" in the path to the
file I want to edit, in the Xemacs title bar also this directory
name is shortened to the 8-character format. However, when saving
the file, the file is saved in the correct directory)

unexpected behaviour of `with-output-to-string'

Dear Bug Team!
I recently have been working at a small program, which makes FreeBSD's
"cdcontrol"-command accessible from within XEmacs, in order to add a
small cdplayer to my local setup and learn more elisp.
I heavily rely on that command-line tool and need to call it regularly
via `shell-command-to-string'. Letting my program run over night, I
found a pretty slow XEmacs the next morning, because lots of
*string-output*-buffers had been opened.
The problem seems to be in `with-output-to-string', which opens
temporary buffers, but instead of removing them, just deletes the
buffers' content.
I locally defined a substitute for `with-output-to-string', replacing
the last line of

21.4.8 and .9 (win32) problems importing the ps-font-info-database from older versions

Hello,
after updating from 21.4.6 to 21.4.9 [3] (win32) I couldn't print using the
ps-print-xxx commands. I started to search for changed configuration
settings with no results.
I found the problem in the ps-font-info-database which couldn't be
automatically imported by 21.4.8 or 21.4.9 in a consistent way from my
versions 21.4.6 custom.el. I had to set the ps-font-info-database to
default and manually set my old configuration. Then ps-print-xxx worked again.

Build fails for 21.5.9 on AIX 4.3.3 with IBM compilers

When building 21.5.9 on AIX 4.3.3 using either the IBM VisualAge C/C++
Compiler (VAC) or the older IBMCXX Compiler, the process stops at the
compilation of src/keymap.c with the following error:
"keymap.c", line 4015.1: 1506-191 (E) The character # is not a valid C
source character.
"keymap.c", line 4015.8: 1506-276 (S) Syntax error: possible missing
')'?
"keymap.c", line 4015.2: 1506-045 (S) Undeclared identifier ifdef.
"keymap.c", line 4017.2: 1506-201 (S) #else can only appear within a
#if, #elif, #ifdef or #ifndef block.
"keymap.c", line 4018.75: 1506-275 (S) Unexpected text ')' encountered.
"keymap.c", line 4019.2: 1506-202 (S) #endif can only appear at the end
of a #if, #elif, #ifdef or #ifndef block.
Obviously, the IBM compilers can't handle the "#ifdef" statement within
the memcpy function call at line 4015 ff. in src/keymap.c:

Compiling with gcc works fine, but I'd like to use one of the IBM
compilers as they provide better optimization for the RS/6000
architecture and produce smaller binaries. If anyone has already built
successfully with one of these compilers on AIX, I'd be glad to hear
which flags/options are required to get along with the code fragment
above.
Otherwise I'd kindly ask to move the "memcpy" line into the "#ifdef" and
"#else" branches. Although it may look less elegant, it will make XEmacs
compile on the RS/6000 architecture with the standard AIX compiler (not
everybody has gcc available on AIX).
