Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
This bug involves a bad interaction between vm and xemacs; I'm not
sure where to put the blame, so I'm reporting it to both places.
The function vm reads in a mailbox file by binding
coding-system-for-read to no-conversion (in the xemacs version), and
doing find-file-noselect within the scope of that binding. vm then
expects the resulting buffer's coding system to be no-conversion, but
in fact it's taken from default-buffer-file-coding-system. As a
result, vm later has to use encode-coding-region to get the buffer
back into raw mode before processing it (which as I understand it is
also a bug, since iso-2022-8 isn't a reversible encoding, but that's a
subject for another bug report). This can take a lot of time for
large mailboxes--to open a 12Mb mailbox on my machine, it takes 74
seconds if I have default-buffer-file-coding-system set to iso-2022-8,
as opposed to 16 seconds if I have it set to no-conversion.
Here's a little test case to illustrate the problem. The vm author
apparently would expect this to return no-conversion, but it actually
returns iso-2022-8.

--with-dialogs=athena --with-widgets=athena --with-athena=3d
is what I use. Some people like the --with-gtk build (I think that
automatically turns on the widgets, but you may need --with-widgets),
but there are still bugs in the GTK port.

Apologies for being a bit late building this and apologies again if someone else
has already reported this and/or fixed it (or if the release notes said
something about it and I failed to read it).
A couple of problems building with gtk and the new gc.
...
device.c:116: structure has no member named `x_keysym_map_hash_table'
...
I think it's meant to be `x_keysym_map_hashtable'.
Also we get tens of these:

...
I have no idea what that's intended to be, but not using the new gc seems to fix
it.:)

I'm facing the following two problems using the sef-built 21.5.8 as specified in the build-report below. Please note that the build was done under W2k using the latest Cygwin.
1. Building from the orginal sources fails with unresolved symbols related to libintl. After adding "-L/lib" to LDFLAGS it compiles flawlessly.
2. In gdb mode every command, issued a single time, is executed *twice*. This is definitely worse than no. 1 as debugging is a pain like that.

Dear Bug Team!
This morning I upgraded my system from Red Hat 7.2 to 8.0.
The pieces haven't stopped rolling yet.
It seemed an apropos time to upgrade to XEmacs 21.4.10. I've
been running 21.4.0 (Solid Vapor).
I downloaded and unwound the tarball and ran configure. It
ended with this message:
*** PANIC *** The C compiler can no longer build working executables.
*** PANIC *** Please examine the tail of config.log for runtime errors.
*** PANIC *** The most likely reason for this problem is that configure
*** PANIC *** links with shared libraries, but those libraries cannot be
*** PANIC *** found at run time.
*** PANIC ***
*** PANIC *** On a Linux system, edit /etc/ld.so.conf and re-run ldconfig.
*** PANIC *** ... rest deleted ...
Sigh. In many years of building xemacs distributions, this
has never happened. The message says simply to edit
/etc/ld.so.conf, but it doesn't suggest what should go in
there. In any case, I'm not the sort of user who plays
around a lot with moving libraries around, though I load
lots of developer stuff. I've never had a problem compiling
any standard well-packaged program, and haven't had a
standard released XEmacs distribution build fail in at least
five years.
For the record, here is the contents of myh /etc/ld.so.conf,
but I sincerly doubt that's where the problem is. It appears
more likely something is missing that should be there. If
/etc/ld.so.conf is simply a list of directories in which to
look for shared libraries, shouldn't /lib be in it? Here is
the file's content:

For the record, the first sentence of the PANIC message is a

Just compiled the gtk-version o 21.4.10 and noticed that some of the
buttons (Save Quit) don't work in the customization buffer.
I presume it is a gtk-bug
