1) Download the packages that you want to install from:
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.

I found there is a bug in window-displayed-height in XEmacs. Maybe
the combination of these 3 options trigger the bug. First, the
article configuration and g-a-f-w-c resized the frame, but the article
window is not redisplayed. Second, the article buffer contains an
X-face which causes the actual displayed height is less than the
normal height. But because the article window is not redisplayed,
window-displayed-height returns a wrong value (my assumption), which
results that move-to-window-line in gnus-article-next-page to a wrong
point.
A workaround is putting redisplay-frame before move-to-window-line,
i.e.

I missed the part about 21.5 CVS. I'm using 21.4.4. For this version the
autodetect works correctly except, as I pointed out earlier, for the
erroneous inclusion of linuxplay.o in src/Makefile.
To test this load the sound code from xemacs-21.4.4/etc/sample.init.el,
make sure you don't have visible-bell set [ (setq visible-bell nil) if
necessary] and hit C-g.

As I reported earlier, I can't seem to get past missing symbols in gdbm.
For starters, I did (CVS update -r r25-1-latest-beta) to start the day in
synch.
There were some updates taken, no indication in the ChangeLog.
From .../xemacs-21.5/i686-pc-cygwin/ did ../configure [options shown
below], and make. CFLAGS=--verbose. I'm not sure what it's telling me. I
see "-L/usr/lib" and that is where "libgdbm.dll.a" exists. I can't tell
whether the compiler recognizes it. Is ".dll" in the name a secret known
to gcc? I suppose if it were not we would find "libgdbm.a" and link
statically.
I snipped LOADS out of the build log. I'll be happy to send it if anyone
thinks I left out something relevant.
Anyway, I'm still dead in the water.

I hesitate to report this, because the systems folks have made some changes
to the mail server, and there have been other problems. However, I seem to
be the only one having problems (most people here use Netscape for mail,
and the other XEmacs/VM guys use a separate proc to grab mail from the POP
server).
Also, I've had no problems with XEmacs/VM prior to this for years.
What I'm seeing is this:
o although I have vm-auto-get-new-mail set to 60 seconds, it never actually
gets mail until I manually tell it to (via g)
o even when I do that, I have to try repeatedly - after several tries
(i.e. banging on "g" like a madman), it will either:
- tell me my password is incorrect, so I have to re-enter it, or
- download a large batch of messages
o another weird thing I'm seeing is that occasionally I'm seeing msgs with
this in the header:
+OK 2286 octets
in between the X-VM-v5-Data and Return-Path headers
the reason I notice this is that it screws up the displayed headers, so I
see many more than usual
o the sys admin says he's seeing lots of this in the mail server logs:

o one last data point is that when I sent a msg to our sys admin, he said

let me know if there's any other data that might be useful, or if there's
anything I should try
most of all, I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else is seeing similar
weirdness

Its a scavenger hunt! No, its a holy war against evil software patents!
I've talked to a few people on xemacs-beta already, but I figured I would
send out a general call for help. I was recently contacted by some
high-powered intellectual-property lawyers in chicago who wanted to discuss
the history of Emacs/W3 (early 1994, late 1993).
My first thought of course was that somebody was trying to get a bogus
patent and was making sure none of the old browsers had prior art. And my
first suspect was Microsoft. It turns out I had it completely backwards.
Back in August of 1994 a company called Eolas filed for - and was
eventually granted - a patent on what they called 'weblets'. For those old
fogies out there, you might remember the huge flamewars about this on
www-talk at the time. This basically patented the <embed> tag proposed by
dave ragget for HTML+. And they are now suing the pants off of Microsoft
for patent infringement.

The patent for anyone who wants to see is United States Patent 5,838,906:

So, why do I care? It looks like microsoft's best bet to show prior art
and defeat this bozo's patent is Emacs/W3. According to my ChangeLog
entries, I implemented the <embed> tag from HTML+ to do inlined video/mpeg,
text/plain, and text/html rendering. This included patching mpeg_play at
the time to be able to draw in an external window instead of
creating/managing its own.
It pains me to help microsoft defend itself, but I think software patents
are even more evil, and my hatred for this particular patent predates my
distaste for microsoft.
So, if anybody has a copy of an old distribution of Emacs/W3 from early may
of 1994, _PLEASE_ contact me. Due to several hard drive crashes and being
a poor student at the time, I don't have tape backups.
Also, any email archives of gnu-emacs-sources with announcements of the
mpeg support, distributions of Emacs/W3, or emails from/to me about
implementation details of this from the lucid emacs mailing lists (I have
archives of help-lucid-emacs and bug-lucid-emacs dating back to 1992
courtesy of jamie, but they don't seem to have too many emails relevant to
this).
The lawyers have a deadling of early september to submit any discovered
documents, or they cannot be used ＠ trial. So... please dig around. I've
got a meeting with the lawyers tentatively scheduled for thursday - if I
could have a copy of w3-0.9.xxx.tar.gz by then, that would be awesome.
