Just the top level. But I delete the current contents, then build new
GtkMenuItem objects and stick them in there. Not the fastest thing, but
that is how Gtk menus work. *sigh*
I've been thinking of how I could tag each GtkMenuItem with its label and
reuse those objects that I can. Most menus will share 80% of their items,
just tacking on stuff at the end.

Setting 'backup-by-copying-when-linked' should fix the issue: the
problem only occurs when using O_CREAT through a symlink to a
non-existent file.
That would serve as a work around for the issue. I am still, personally,
inclined to count it as a nasty bug in the kernel though.

Hmmmm. Well, with that assurance in mind, I feel less worried about it.
I might have a shot at changing the code, assuming that I can find any
free time over the next few days...

[bug] sh-script - error in font locking

XEmacs from recent CVS, "21.2 (beta34) \"Molpe\" XEmacs Lucid".
xemacs -q -vanilla .zsh/.zprofile
M-x font-lock-mode <-- There are no color highlights.

I tried to debug, instrumented `font-lock-fontify-pending-extents'
with edebug, and pressed space again. It pegged the CPU for a second
and dumped core. Attached is the stack trace, for whatever it's
worth.
I noticed that it does NOT do this after I load the
~/.xemacs/.options.el I have. Font lock works fine then... I traced
it to the following situtation.
At the top of ~/.zsh/.zprofile is "#! /bin/zsh -f", and in
/tmp/.options.el, I have:

)
After evaluating that in a vanilla XEmacs, `M-x font-lock-mode' in
the .zprofile works correctly. If I move the comment so that
"/bin/shit" is the shell, I get the error as before.
Without setting `sh-shell-file', it's value, in the vanilla XEmacs,
is "/usr/bin/zsh-beta". Here's what my filesystem (and anyone else's
using Debian and `zsh-beta') looks like.

Ah, ok, it's set with a `getenv'... So, I guess that when `sh-script'
is setting `sh-shell-file' via `(getenv "SHELL")', there ends up
being a mismatch with the shebang line?
Aliasing `zsh-beta' to `zsh' cures the warning messages. Patch is in
the Q. I cannot fix the segfault.

menubar flickering... found the cause, looking for a cure...

Well, I tracked down _why_ the menubar in XEmacs/GTK is flickering so much
when using 'speedbar' or 'grep'. Basically, the variable current-menubar
is both buffer-local and magic. Its magic function calls
MARK_MENUBAR_CHANGED, which causes the menubar to get reconstructed. No
problem in and of itself, but when calling set-buffer, this causes the
buffer-local variables to be evaluated, which nukes the menubar, etc.
I don't think that the menubar should be invalidated just because of
set-buffer, because it isn't supposed to change the buffer for more than
the current command.
But menubar_variable_changed() in menubar.c does not / cannot know whether
the change is permanent or temporary.
I couldn't find any place in lwlib where it tries to be smart about this
type of thing, so either I am missing something or it is gobs faster than
the GTK menubar widget at updating itself.
Can anyone think of a way around this? The flicker is horrendous with
speedbar.

Hi,
I guess this might have already been reported. Whenever I send a
mail, the mail buffer still sits in my *Buffer List*. I have to
delete that manually. I am using xemacs version 20.4 on a
sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1. I guess the release date for this version
was Tue Dec 15 1998.

I cannot to see why the other windowing systems are not seeing so much
flicker. Does GTK-XEmacs build up the whole tree or just the top level?
The only real solution is to a real redisplay (i.e. compare the actual
and the displayed structures) like Andy had to do for the widgets in
21.2

I am afraid rmail is more or less unmaintained under XEmacs. All of us
use other mailers.
