At least not in the right-to-left text area. It looks like pango rendering operates on a PangoLayout structure, which according to the docs 'represents an entire paragraph of text'. That's how it handles proper wrapping of text in r2l languages. If XEmacs handled different direction text itself, pango could probably be used to render the actual glyphs pretty easily though. You would basically need to keep a PangoContext in the device record, gotten via pango_x_get_context(), set up some routines to get the appropriate GCs with pango_x_context_set_funcs(), and draw glyphs with pango_x_render() instead of gdk_draw_text(). Hmmm... :) I think it is a little premature to start trying to use the pango stuff though. Could be cool to experiment with once the unicode guys are ready to test it out though. Might be easier than trying to munge up a huge list of fonts for dealing with it under standard X. -Bill P.

The current code is based off of 21.1.9, because that is what InfoDock is currently based off of, and they are sponsoring the work. :) I plan on moving it up to 21.2 very quickly once I finish the project though. Since I just went ahead and treated it like a new windowing system, everything is in *-gtk.c files, so it should be pretty simple. There are a few places in core lisp and C that I had to change, but nothing major. When I move it up to 21.2, I plan on implementing andy's widget stuff, which should be fairly easy. I already had to subclass the 'GtkFixed' class to deal with the scrollbar placement oddities in XEmacs. This allows you to place widgets in arbitrary places. I just checked in a whole slew of changes today that get menus working. I had to rewrite all my beautiful lisp code in C because it was just too darn slow and caching didn't even help. All of the menus are dynamically generated, not just :filter ones. Switching menubars is very fast because it basically just populates the menu items in the menubar. Only the menu about to be popped down is generated (I think the lwlib menus currently generate the entire menubar when you click in the menubar, not 100% sure). As I said in an earlier note to the XEmacs list, the menubar is currently in a GtkHandleBox, which means that it can be detached from its frame and moved around independently. Tearoff menu items almost work - define TEAR_OFF_MENUS in menubar-gtk.c if you want to play with them. I'm not sure how Gnome apps (and gimp) get the behaviour of the menu remaining popped up. Still thinking about this one. Menus are at a pointer where I can leave them though - things like detachable menus are gravy (and not very good gravy :) as far as I'm concerned. On to toolbars tomorrow - although this will probably be nasty given that toolbar.c wants to know about pixel positions of the mouse and things like that. I want to let Gtk handle all that nastiness. I bought liam a force-feedback racing wheel for his computer, so we've been playing Viper Racing and Midtown Madness a lot.
