I've just reread the interesting discussion starting at: http://www.xemacs.org/list-archives/xemacs-beta/199805/msg01144.html The upshot, from my point of view is this: Back then, placing init files in ~/.xemacs wasn't a good idea because there was a package hierarchy living at ~/.xemacs. Now that that's changed, I couldn't see any reasonable objections to finally implementing ~/.xemacs/init.elc? as a preferred alternative to ~/.emacs. GNU Emacs style default key bindings? 24 years

I am a long time GNU Emacs user who's thinking of starting to use Xemacs. I've downloaded and installed version 21.1 of Xemacs without any problems. It comes up just fine. However, I am shocked to find that Xemacs does not use the same default key bindings as Emacs (which have been burned into my fingers by years of use.) I've looked in the Xemacs FAQ's but could not find anything appropriate. Do you know where I can find a setup file that will make the Xemacs keys as close as possible to the standard Emacs keys? Or, is there some reason that that's not possible? Thank you for any help you can give me. ...Bob

Can you turn on dialog boxes... 24 years

for prompts that currently appear in the mini-buffer? I was using a commercial editor today called Epsilon that very faithfully mimics xemacs functionality and keybinds. Anyway, when I invoked its version of EPS mode, instead of inverting the screen to get the password, it popped up a dialog box. The important part was that when I used its shell mode, it also popped up a dialog box - that meant that I did NOT get every command echo'ed back at me, as does happen if I run a command in the shell buffer that triggers the (invert-the-screen-get-the-password) mode. -- Matthew O. s/mime + xemacs 24 years

has anyone thought about playing with s/mime support for XEmacs? there is a free (as in gnu free, i believe) library available now that the export controls are relaxed. there looks to be at least support for solaris,linux, & ms platforms. it's in c++ so i don't know if if could be integrated as easily as say the ldap stuff for example. relevant urls: j.g. van dyke wrote the code. http://www.jgvandyke.com/services/infosec/sfl.htm and it's available here. http://www.armadillo.huntsville.al.us./software/smime/ i'm sure there are lot's of folks essentially forced into using either netscape or i.e. for "corporate" mail because s/mime is incorporated into the mailer. For a lot of mailers, pgp support has just not been well supported. jeff

crash, latest beta cvs, progress bar 24 years

i'm assuming this is another progress bar/gutter crash have not seen this one before. i cvs'd this afternoon, and ran vm ok for a few hours. then i tried enabling font-lock in my summary buffer. worked ok at first. though the progress bar acts very weird. seems like before it slowly progressed as the buffer was fontified. now it zips back and forth madly, almost like it is progressing for each line or maybe each regexp. anyone it looks like it's outta control. well, i did a "get new mail" at one point and it spewed out ahuge backtrace which completely overran my xterm..... it may not have been helpful anyhow since this particular xemacs was compiled with no debugging info and optimized. well, i've got some of it, but i doubt it's useful... appended to the end. here is a gdb
