Another psgml attempt 24 years, 3 months

Disregard my previous message. I found the problem, although I'm not sure of the best way to fix it yet. I've packaged up what I have now, which fixes several problems identified by various people. It is here: <URL:http://www.ittc.ukans.edu/kan/psgml-18022000.tar.gz> Again, this URL is temporary. That file will not be there by at most a month from now. As far as I know, everything has been taken care of except: - the fix for the SGML/HTML menu problem. Right now I have just given up on subsuming the SGML menu in the HTML menu; they are separate. - one (1) new DTD suggested by a comp.emacs.xemacs denizen (namely the XML Structures stuff). If the psgml users in the audience would give this another try, I'd like to try to have a releasable package sometime next week. For the long term, it looks like psgml-html has fallen behind the times. I've done some easy updates of it, but there is a lot more to do. It duplicates a lot of functionality in psgml itself, and does some of it badly (for example, handling the case of inserted tags). It needs to be gone over thoroughly. Also, we need to look at what in psgml-html.el, linuxdoc-sgml.el, and sgml-mode.el should be migrated into psgml proper. Fun stuff! Thanks for any feedback, -- Jerry James

With Gerd's help, I've hammered on the PSGML stuff a little more. I've got one puzzling problem that I hope somebody here can help me with. The code in psgml-html.el attempts to subsume the SGML menu under the HTML menu, like this: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (define-derived-mode html-mode sgml-mode "HTML" ... ; sigh ... need to call this now to get things working. The symptoms are: - When HTML mode is started, the HTML menu exists, and lists all the top-level items from the SGML menu. However, the SGML menu has submenus, named "File Options" and "User Options". These submenus are empty under the HTML menu. - When HTML mode is started, there is no SGML menu. However, the moment one clicks anywhere on the menubar, the SGML menu appears. It contains *only* its two submenus; the other items are gone. However, the submenus contain all of the right stuff; exactly the stuff missing from the same submenus on the HTML menu. - After making the SGML menu appear in HTML mode, the SGML menu pops up (apparently at random; at least, I've discerned no pattern) when in buffers of non-SGML related modes, still containing only its two submenus. I'm running XEmacs 21.1.9 with the latest set of packages. Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. -- Jerry James

How to install XEmacs Beta 24 years, 3 months

(this is a repeat of a so-far unaswered question) How do I locally install the XEmacs beta (21.2.x) if I've also locally installed 21.1.x? In other words, I built 21.1.x with --prefix=$HOME and did an actual 'make install'. I want to play with the beta series but I want everything to coexist so that 21.1.x does not get trashed. Can this be done? Also, hw do I handle the packages? time-stamp patch 24 years, 3 months

I used the time-stamp write-file-hook successfully in fsf emacs for quite a while now. I used a 4 digit year. time-stamp-format "%:y-%02m-%02d %02H:%02M:%02S %u" but with xemacs a got the error message: "Wrong argument type: sequencep, 2000" without the hook, M-x time-stamp, it works okay, but this is annoying. I'm too much a elisp newbie to debug this hook successfully by myself. looks like it expects the 4-digit year as vector or string? ;; the hook fails in xemacs 21.1.9, works okay in fsf emacs 20.5.1 ;; do M-x time-stamp manually in xemacs (require 'time-stamp);(add-hook 'write-file-hooks 'time-stamp) BTW: A default time-stamp-format "%:y-%02m-%02d %02H:%02M:%02S %u" seems to be better than the 2 digit year only. And it is understandable at the frist glance for all humans, not only those in anglican countries (what is the month, what the day, what the year). And it is the ISO 8601 date format also. One of the better things ISO came up with lately.
