It will still not work perfectly (this will come later, the patch was too late for 21.0) in the sense that the properties are not merged as you would expect. If you mean the "don't use gnuclient and xemacs -nw on the same tty" problem then that is certainly _not_ easily solvable. However it is also fairly obscure. I think the LDAP support is also nice (although currently probably underused). For me the windows port is the most exiting thing. You should really mention it comes with an installer since that seems to be the thing that the windows users are most pleasantly surprised about. Jan

Hello there ! I have been asked to write an article for a german IT magazine (iX) about the upcoming 21.0 release. With regard to that, what do PEOPLE HERE think should I tell the people about ? What are a) the brand new features and b) what is different to 20.4 ? Of course, for a) -Packages (and its implications ...) -Windows-Port. If there is somebody in Germany reading this list who could write a small report about this, I would be glad, as "I don't do drugs or windows" as Steve has put it once. - ... and for b) -Don't mix xresources and Options>Edit-Faces ;-) -Are there any MULE differences (IANAM - I am not a Mule(-User)). - ... Well, and then there's the NEWS file. What do people on this list find must be mentioned ? What obvious problems could be easily solved (i.e. to which I could write two lines saying "don't do that", like setting fonts in two different places or the gnuclient-problem on the shell.) Other comments ? Another question: when is the "final" 21.0 release due ? I don't know how to get *t-o-b-i-f* set early enough. I guess we'd have to delay setting up any fonts until AFTER .emacs is read. Or perhaps *t-o-b-i-f* set via X resources. (Yuck) Ray

Sure. *t-o-b-i-f* works correctly (with my patch applied), but it just doesn't get set early enough. I just tried this in my .emacs, and it works. However, it's pretty ugly. (setq *try-oblique-before-italic-fonts* t) (make-face-unitalic 'italic) (make-face-unitalic 'bold-italic) (make-face-italic 'italic) (make-face-italic 'bold-italic) I'm not sure that we want to be telling our users that they need to do this to get the fonts right. -- Colin
