setting font of `shell-output-face'? bug? 25 years, 1 month

Hello, I tried to set the font for the shell-output-face with (set-face-property 'shell-output-face 'font "-sony-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-170-100-100-c-120-iso8859-1") but that doesn't change anything in the *shell* buffer. I checked that the part of But doing the same thing for shell-prompt-face like this (set-face-property 'shell-prompt-face 'font "-sony-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-170-100-100-c-120-iso8859-1") works fine. I checked that the face `shell-output-face' is really used in my current *shell* buffer by calling (save-excursion (set-buffer "*shell*") (mapcar 'extent-face (extent-list))) which gives the return value: (shell-prompt-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-output-face nil shell-prompt-face nil) Is this a bug? Make the standard functionality optimal for 3-button mice and find a way for the others to change the setting. And add a suggestion in the docs for MS folks to buy a 3-button mouse, they're pretty cheap and that's something to never regret (my PC always had one, btw). I don't think that's an option for Mac though. But please don't cripple it for Unix just because of the MS port! - Tor

Could we not just add another level of indirection here. It seem to me that the problem is that we treat mouse buttons differently to keys. We don't say 'the third key on the bottom row', we say 'c'. Why not do the same with mouse buttons. Have buttons with logical names (select, enact, paste or some such) and use these in the maps. Then let the users bind these buttons wherever they like. Dave

Yup. If the mouse is dragged and then released, it selects instead of following. This might be very easy if I actually do the thing I discussed with Hrvoje on the last day in つくば (hey wow, inputting hiragana actually works!): adapting the stallmacs event system to XEmacs. It gives much less events to lisp (by compressing them logically). At least it seems to me, after I read the lisp docs of emacs today. For example a button-press, some motion events, a button release will only generate a drag event. The drag event has all data which is needed (starting position, end position, modifiers, etc.). Motion events will only be generated if you request them by a special form. Double-, Triple-, Quadrupel-, whatever events get generated (but in a mysterious way: you will get them all through until the last click -- so you get click, double-click, and triple-click if the user triple-clicks -- sounds not so logical to me, cause the programmer must base the binding of the triple-click on the result of the double-click, which is based on the click). For me it sounds more logical to create only on triple-click on a triple click. Depending bindings on the execution of other bindings sounds error prone to me. Even a start-dnd-drag (yeah, and again Dungeon'n'Dragons enter XEmacs ;-) ) could be created this way (cause it's also a combination of events). But first I will have to dig a bit in the source of emacs and XEmacs to see whats ticking inside the event system. Regards, Oliver.

Theoretically it could even be brought down to an actual query of the mouse. With an unix a 'xmodmap -pp' might give us the number of buttons. But how do we get them on Win & Mac? But the 'global' thing will also work, and might even set other things to make XEmacs behave more natural to the platform (selecting text on Windows using shift-cursor). Regards, Oliver.
