Successfully built XEmacs-21.0-pre8 "Corsican" on Digital UNIX 4.C running on a Compaq Personal Workstation 500au (EV56). Built with "cc -O3 -std" and gnu make. > ./configure --without-gcc --with-gnu-make --site-includes=/usr/local/include --cflags="-O3 -std" --package-path="~/.xemacs::~/utils/xemacs/packages:/usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.0/packages:/usr/local/lib/xemacs/packages" There was one problem with -rpath. I had to edit configure to change this from "-rpath" to "-rpath ". This has already been discussed, but I can confirm that the space is needed in my case. I also finally think I have a handle on packages! It's amazing how one tiny bit of missing information combined with unclear errors can mung things up. (Note the --package-path above. I will be moving my packages to ~/.xemacs before I do this again.) I think this is getting close to being ready for release. R. Locale is another example of a load-path-less package. _pkg.el files aren't used after building as their entire contents get snarfed into the auto-autoloads.el file. I'm loathe to add directories to load-path that contain only tiny auto-autoloads files as every extra directory causes a slowdown in path searching and startup. Perhaps we can stuff it in the top level package lisp directory.

Installers are free to do The Right Thing for their site. The point of the restriction on our side is to give the installer maximum flexibility on how much stuff gets dumped. If everyone at a site uses package `foo' and foo is relatively static then it is an excellent candidate for dumping. A dumped package that isn't used is pure, 100% wasted space. An undumped lisp package can be entirely eliminated by deleting its lisp directory. A dumped lisp package cannot be eliminated without redumping the xemacs binary.
