Packaging -- yet another confused person 27 years

I thought that I understood where to put packages, but I just updated to b40-pre2 using CVS and was disabused of this conceit. I had downloaded several of the package tarballs from binary-packages and untar'd them into /usr/local/lib/xemacs/packages. Under b38, the installed xemacs found them. I just rebuilt after updating from CVS and now the new executable does not find the .el's when run out of the build directory. Where have I turned wrong this time. This is cygwin/W95 if it matters. However, <root>/lib/xemacs-<version>/xemacs-packages gets precedence over it in case you have version-specific packages. sh-script.el fix 27 years

There is a question about this in the NTEmacs FAQ I don't know if this is your problem though What do I do about the "No match 2 in highlight..." error I get from sh-script.el? Apparently the sh-script package isn't finding the shell program correctly. [PATCH} customize package installation 27 years

No feedback so here's a real patch for your perusal. andy 1998-05-12 Andy Piper <andyp(a)parallax.co.uk> * package-get.el (package-get-create-custom): new function to auto-generate package-get-custom.el from package-get-base.el. * (package-get-ever-installedp): new function. * (package-get-custom): new function to get all packages specified by customize. * package-get-custom.el: new file of package loading customizations auot-generated by package-get-custom-create. * custom-load.el: updated to reflect package-get-custom.el.

BTW, if you can create the specifier, it might be cool to do it by the 21.0 freeze (if the scrolling feature will indeed be in 21.0), which gives you, like, three days. :-) Now that the dividers don't punch me in the eye (has this any meaning in English?:-)) with their color that much, I am beginning to like them. Oh, and BTW: the futures page used to have an entry saying that a `bevel' face property would be cool.
