[Patch] BackSpace/Delete don't have unambiguous ASCII equivalents 25 years, 11 months

I'm posting this here because it probably warrants more discussion than it's going to get if I post it to xemacs-patches. The primary motivation for this was to fix the problem whereby doing: M-x set-variable RET some-variable RET xxx<BackSpace> brings up a help buffer. Now, there may be other ways of fixing the above problem, but neither of these mappings correspond to the way that my system works, and the same is probably true for many (and maybe even most) other systems. So far, the only thing which appears to break is eterm, which is something of a special case anyhow (IMHO). [patch]Changing GIF libraries 25 years, 11 months

Well folks, as I am still stewing over what I should do about my modified giflib, I went ahead and created a 'giflib-lite' that does decoding only (and therefore should be safe from UniSys's goons). Even better, this gifreader lib now is fully autoconf and libtool enabled, so building it should be a breeze. Please grab a copy of 0.9 (I don't have docs written yet, so it ain't final) from http://www.camelot-soft.com/~jareth , build it, and apply the patch below to xemacs to make it use the lib (which is also now a lot smaller, yeah!). 1998-05-28 P. Yes, but it would be nice if we didn't have to have any. If its a good idea for XEmacs to have some functionality, we should try to convince the core author if at all possible. The evil is contained in x_update_vertical_scrollbar_callback( ) in line 468 there is a call signal_special_Xt_user_event (win, Qscrollbar_page_down, Fcons (win, make_int ((int) line))); but signal_special_Xt_user_event() is expecting a channel as the first argument and stuffing it directly into the newly created event! Wow, this must have been this way for ages (I only have 20.4 handy but the Changelog doesn't contain anything relevant). I guess what saved us, is the very lucky definition of event-frame (defun event-frame (event) "Return the frame that EVENT occurred on. This will be nil for some types of events (e.g. keyboard and eval events)." (fw-frame (event-channel event))) ^^^^^^^^ which will always return a frame. So if anybody is in the right mood remove the call to fw-frame and see what breaks :-) I have to leave in a second. Maybe some X/event-handling expert can fix this. If not I will look into it tomorrow. BTW: when using the 'pobj' defined in dbxinit I get the following error for some object types (like windows for example :-) (dbx) pobj object "lrecord_toolbar_data" is not defined in the scope `xemacs`print.c`Fprint` evaluation failed strange... lrecord_toolbar_button *is* defined but lrecord_toolbar_data isn't -- any ideas?? The main change I could see in VC was that we added menu support (we should change it to use easymenu), and some bits were trying to be WAY too smart and lost big time on files that were the result of a merge or patch (it would not recognize them as CVS controlled files). And another thing, using (getenv "HOME") is probably the right thing to use for `user-home-directory' under Cygwin32.
