s/a bit/a lot/
The problem is that all that tunneling tends to result in packets
getting split up. This can result in extra round trips, etc. It may
help to tune your network by limiting the packet size for the actual
IP packets to about 50 bytes less than the size of the physical medium.
As I said, most things work okay. There is generally a substantial
pause
when I delete words however (kill-word or backward-kill-word).
This is undoubtedly X selection protocol. First, if you're using
Motif, the Motif clipboard is horrendously inefficient. You can get
big gains with Motif by setting `x-selection-strict-motif-ownership'
to nil. Second, if you don't use X for cutting and pasting, you can
avoid the selection-handling overhead by setting
`interprogram-cut-function' and/or `interprogram-paste-function' to
nil.
I think there have also been some changes that tend to detune XEmacs
for Unix from the Windows crowd. I plan to review some of those.
Finally, if XEmacs is running with libXt from recent X.org, there are
a bunch of ways it can get into a loop. Apparently sometimes it can
get back out, other times it can't. This is especially bad when
XEmacs is running on a Mac because Macs have a terrible implementation
of poll.
Any chance it can be improved a bit?
Well, I'd like to, but this stuff is really hard.
