Unfortunately they don't seem to care about such bug reports or don't
have the manpower to fix these bugs. We are using `with-syntax-table'
at several places, so I'm not sure if I can code around it in a
sensible way.
Since the XEmacs project is not updating its version of AUCTeX,
anyway, it will probably take some time before there is a massive
uproar about this.
The standard answer to problem reports of the AUCTeX developers to the
XEmacs developer list is "we never get any complaints from AUCTeX
users, so there is no priority to fix this".
So Artemio, you might want to add your voice to this problem getting
fixed.
I am copying this mail to the XEmacs developer list in order to remind
them of this problem, but my own track record in getting things fixed
in XEmacs that I complain about is abysmal, so you might try
separately, maybe with example files and recipes (using the nightly
snapshot XEmacs package from Reiner, perhaps?) illustrating the
seriousness, perhaps with a screenshot.
There seems to be little point in making a _contained_, reproduceable
"non-real-world" example, since Ralf already did this years ago (see
the above link). That should be sufficient for debugging and fixing
the problem.
So your task is "merely" to demonstrate that ignoring it is a bad
idea. Maybe a screenshot will be all it takes. No idea.

Removing the call to `copy-syntax-table' from the macro seems to fix it.

If Ben is the only one understanding the code, it doesn't make much
sense to send a patch, because he will be the only one able to judge
if the patch is correct. Other than that I already told you a
potential fix and there is a reimplementation of `with-syntax-table'
in Gnus using the same fix.

Quite funny. Too bad that it is also quite sad. You tell me when
reporting bugs affecting AUCTeX users that there is no priority to fix
them because nobody else complains about them. When I tell others to
complain to you instead of to us, you accuse me of "inciting to riot"
and declare that you can ignore reports regardless of their number.

The idea of the copy probably was to have things like
`modify-syntax-entry' in `body' not have a lasting effect. I doubt
that this is actually the intent of the macro according to its doc
string: actually, it is quite likely that people would set up a syntax
table with
(with-syntax-table some-table
(modify-syntax-entry ?x ?y)
...
)
The corresponding macro in Emacs, if I am not mistaken, is the

I think it likely that copying the syntax table is a mistake, given
what people would expect from the doc string of the macro and given
that there is a non-trivial amount of code around which relies on the
non-copying behavior.
So I don't think your patch is "papering over the problem", but rather
fixing it. I think it likely that `copy-syntax-table' works as
intended, and that it is just misused here.

Hi,
I'm sorry to report that the new font locking scheme in auctex still
doesnt' work at all in xemacs 21.5.27. I am attaching a screen shot
showing the problem, together with my xemacs/auctex installation data,
although from the previous thread it seems to me that you guys are
perfectly aware of the problem. I also understand that the problem may
be hard to fix. In the meantime, is there any workaround I could try?
