The buffers menu is organized according to some traditional
principles. Cf buff-menu.el for the actual code.
The buffers tab control is Andy Piper's personal preference; nobody's
ever done anything systematic (well, I consed up a demo package, see
http://turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp/Tools/XEmacs/buffers-tab-extensions.tar.gz,
but I don't even use it myself). Cf gutter-items.el for the code.
The Consistency Police (mostly Martin Buchholz) just said "omigod" and
configured --without-widgets happily ever after, so nobody's ever done
anything further about it. Feel free to impose some Order on Chaos!
