[Bug: 21.4.22] crash when loading a simple LaTeX file

If XEmacs still crashes when you do that, please let us know!! N.B. This may never get fixed in the 21.4 series, since we have a workaround and the fix seems to me to be likely to require a fairly complete reworking of the progress gauge widget, which might destabilize Windows and so on that are not affected by this crash.
