efs fails to connect to any hosts

I am unable to connect to any hosts using efs. Every time I try to visit a remote file I see messages like: *ftp admin(a)127.0.0.1* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) *ftp anonymous(a)ftp.xemacs.org* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) *ftp anoymous(a)ftp.gnu.org* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) Based upon suggestions I found in various newsgroup postings, I have so far tried the following: * adding -A to efs-ftp-program-args to force active mode transfers * increasing efs-pty-check-retry-time to 30 * increasing efs-pty-check-threshold to 10000 No change had any effect except to lengthen the time UNTIL the failure message was displayed. Trying to connect to a local Zope FTP listener on port 8021, I can see by the lack of any logging info that the server sees no connection attempt. Connecting using the normal ftp client program works fine. Ftp is /usr/bin/ftp. The system is MacOS 10.2.1 (Jaguar).
