here is 100% to make the tab dissapear:
start xemacs,C-x f, C-x o to come back to scratch.
tab dissapeared and will reapear if C-l is pressed.

if you don't have this behaviour on NT, can somebody confirm having it
as well on linux? it might be the easiest one.
now if you really don't get that behaviour, i'll try to help you track
it down with some instructions if you want.
