It's true a name change would break it, but intentionally shadowing a
library is dangerous in any case. Even if it works, it makes
debugging harder for naive users. If there are other good reasons for
forking or recombining or whatever, it may be a good time to
reconsider that design.
Especially since there are now three or four versions of that
particular library (pop.el) floating around, not to mention extended
versions, any of which might end up in some user's ~/.xemacs/.
