Hi,
Here comes yet another status report from the project of converting to
GPLv3 or later.
There are two lists of files below. The first list contains all files
that are in an undecided state. Please inspect: Do we need to do anything
with them. If so what?
The second list contains all files that we can leave untouched and the
reason for that. Please inspect: Are all reasons OK and correct?
Are we getting close to the were an inspection of the xemacs-gplv3
repository could be performed? With the intent that it that is OK we
could merge back to trunk and go GPLv3 or later?

[Bug: 21.5-b34] smtpmail only works after eval'ing

Dear Bug Team!
During debugging the root cause of unexplicable SMTP authentication
failures it turned out that after eval'ing the buffer "smtpmail.el"
things suddenly started working :-/
This behavior is reproducible.
Some variables from smtpmail.el receive their settings via
customize. Anything else I can help with? I guess I could check which
parts of smtpmail.el really need to be eval'ed.

Your assumption is correct, but I am the only someone who builds these
kits. I will try to make a setup kit for every release, but it is

Dear Biswajit - thank you for your kind words. They certainly made me
feel like my efforts in this area have been well worthwhile.
I have re-made setup kits for 21.4.22, 21.5.34 and 21.4 latest and
21.5 latest. I will upload them this afternoon to ftp.xemacs.org.
I will be sending a small patch to XEmacs-patches to work around a
couple of difficulties building without TLS on native Windows. I have
not attempted to build with TLS as of yet.

XEmacs 21.4.23 Released

I have tagged and uploaded XEmacs 21.4.23, "Moral Majority", to the
XEmacs ftp site. The tarball can be found here:
http://ftp.xemacs.org/xemacs-21.4/xemacs-21.4.23.tar.gz . In the next
several days I will post a more formal announcement and update the
website. It has been six years (!!) since my last release (and that
was off of CVS(!), I believe), so I'm certain to have gotten something
wrong. Please let me know what problems you find.
It is my fervent hope that this will be the last 21.4 release of
XEmacs and that 21.5 can be declared stable in the very near future.

Stephen et al,
We are out of space on ftp.xemacs.org. I tried to move most ot the
21.4 tarballs to Attic, but I ran into problems with the "withdrawn"
subdirectory as you own those files. As far as I am concerned, the
"withdrawn" subdirectory can be completely deleted.
How many old versions do we want to keep? I'm OK with axing most of
the contents of the stuff older than 21.4, just preserving a few
milestone releases, like 19.16, etc.
Please let me know what you think I should delete and I'll have a go at it.

After thinking about this for awhile, it dawned on me that the problem
is not with setsid() per se, but rather with the sequence of events
_following_ the setsid() call. That is, setsid() causes some of the
ensuing ioctl() (or similar) calls that set up the pty to fail.
I think I have verified this behavior - I restored the old sysdep.c
module and moved the disconnect_controlling_terminal() call [which
calls setsid()] from right after the fork() to just before the exec()
call and M-x shell works on Cygwin as it always has on linux.
I will endeavor to create a STC for Cygwin that includes all the code
involved in setting up the terminal so we can experiment with moving
the setsid() call between the beginning and the end of the function.

I don't see this segfault. I am running the default version of gcc,
and I assume you are, too. Perhaps you need to rebaseall?
Your build path is "...xemacs-21.4.22..." are you sure you're using
21.4.23 sources?

Yes, the texinfo incompatibilities is one reason I want to EOL 21.4.
An alternative approach for Cygwin would be to patch the .texi sources
to work with newer texinfos.

This error should be fixed in 21.4.23, there's a new
configure.in/configure designed to prevent this. Again - are you sure
you're using 21.4.23?

Hello
When I download packages (rpm, deb, port) and install them manually, the
corresponding package manager installs by coping the relevant files,
leaving the package itself in place.
When I use the same strategy for a xemacs pkg:
That is download package-index.LATEST.ggp
and the relevant package to a directory of my choice and do
M-x pui-add-install-directory RET ~/tmp/ RET
M-x package-get-update-base RET /path/to/package-index.LATEST.pgp RET
M-x pui-list-packages RET
Then the package manager seems to move the files and deletes the
original package.
I find that a bit contra-intuitive. Could this behaviour easily be
changed?
