To: Mats Lidell <matsl(a)xemacs.org>
Right now, xemacs-gtk is pretty usable with GTK 2.X. I've ifdefed
everything so its compilable in both, I just haven't made configure support
both versions. I'll probably tackle a simple change forcing you to pick
one or another.
It's doing its text drawing using Pango. The font loading is currently
pretty simple. It should be possible to use FC fonts, but I haven't tried
them. In other word, you should be able to use the same font names as in
xft.
The biggest annoyance is that clicking the mouse always starts the
selection so you have to hit enter to cancel it. There's lots of
flickering and the toolbar doesn't show. It works well enough that I can
use it to develop itself.
The port to GTK 3.0 is mostly complete, but non-functional. It currently
dies in early initialization, long before it gets to GTK.
I'll send a message here when it does something useful.
The repository is at https://bitbucket.org/jsparkes/xemacs-gtk

does narrowing improve performance on large buffers?
11 years, 1 month
Uwe Brauer
Hi
I sometimes run into performance issues with large (LaTeX) buffers,
having font-lock mode[1] and x-symbol running[2]
I found narrowing always messy but I am thinking of give it a try.
Does anybody know whether it could (or should) improve performance?
thanks
Uwe Brauer
Footnotes:
[1] actually either lazy-lock or fast-lock
[2] I suspect that the culprit is x-symbol because turning it off
improves the performance.

Not sure -- as I said I did this by comparing with gnu emacs, which
also takes a _lot_ more care about buffering and such. So I suspect
that it _is_ waiting, but I don't see an alternative, given that it
does appear that closing the device before returning is the existing
behaviour. . .
Anyone who actually knows anything about alsa/pcm_sound _please_ weigh
in here with some insight!

Ah, sorry -- that's just my habit so if I come back to this in a month
I see what's my fault. . . Feel free to edit that out!

[Bug: 21.5-b33] play-sound-file (and probably other sound fns) are broken
11 years, 1 month
Henry S. Thompson
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
There's a race condition in alsaplay.c which prevents sound-files (or
loaded sounds) from playing.
To reproduce the bug, start xemacs and evaluate
(play-sound-file "/usr/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/sounds/whistle.au" 100)
(adjust path to suit). Nothing happens.
No idea how system-dependent or recent this is.
I tracked the problem down to the fact that the existing code calls
snd_pcm_close on the device handle immediately after writing to it.
I guess this worked once, maybe what 'blocking' means has changed, but
in an case this patch will fix it (discovered by comparing the
equivalent code in emacs, which doesn't have this problem):
