GPLv3|L8R -- Status report - ready for inspection?
7 years, 5 months
Mats Lidell
Hi,
Here comes yet another status report from the project of converting to
GPLv3 or later.
There are two lists of files below. The first list contains all files
that are in an undecided state. Please inspect: Do we need to do anything
with them. If so what?
The second list contains all files that we can leave untouched and the
reason for that. Please inspect: Are all reasons OK and correct?
Are we getting close to the were an inspection of the xemacs-gplv3
repository could be performed? With the intent that it that is OK we
could merge back to trunk and go GPLv3 or later?

Crash running Cygwin bash shell under XEmacs
12 years, 2 months
Mike Alexander
I had a need to run something on my Windows machine today which
required a newer version of Cygwin than the ancient one that was
installed there. After I upgraded to the current version (1.7.9) I
can't start a shell in XEmacs (via M-X shell) using Cygwin's version of
bash. When I try to do so I get
Process bash.exe exited abnormally with code 35584
3 [sig] bash 1168 exception::handle: Exception:
STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
1556 [sig] bash 1168 open_stackdumpfile: Dumping stack trace to
bash.exe.stackdump
The stack dump is uninteresting except that the crash happens at offset
0x169220 in cygwin1.dll. It appears that this crash happens very early
on, before it's read /etc/profile. I see that I also have similar
stack dumps from other programs (find.exe and xargs.exe) in the XEmacs
directory all exactly the same.
I installed the latest Windows version of XEmacs from the installer at
<http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/binaries/win32/InnoSetup/XEmacs_Setup_21...>
and tried starting it with --vanilla. This didn't make any difference.
I also did a clean install of Cygwin 1.7.9 in case there was any crud
left around from the old version. This also didn't help. I'm running
on an old Dell with Windows XP Professional SP3. Perhaps that's the
problem. I probably should install Windows on my Mac under one of the
emulators, but that's more than I want to get into right now.
I've Googled around a bit and although others have seen this problem,
none of the solutions (mostly involving changing ownership of Cygwin
files and running rebaseall) did any good. The bash shell runs fine
when I start it using the .bat file installed by Cygwin, so it's
basically working, but it won't run in an XEmacs shell window.
Has anyone else seen this or know how to fix it? This little episode
reminds me why I avoid using Windows, but sometimes it's necessary.
Mike

Debug on signal + X menubar == assertion failure
12 years, 6 months
Jerry James
I've got a freshly compiled XEmacs from mercurial head. If I evaluate
this in *scratch*, I get the expected result:
(truncate-string-to-width "j.\n\n" 40 nil nil t)
"j.
"
If I select Options->Troubleshooting->Debug on Signal, then try to
evaluate that again, I get this:
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (args-out-of-range "j.
" 4)
byte-code("..." [last-idx last-column end-column ch idx column
char-width str] 3)
truncate-string-to-width("j.\n\n" 40 nil nil t)
eval((truncate-string-to-width "j.\n\n" 40 nil nil t))
eval-interactive((truncate-string-to-width "j.\n\n" 40 nil nil t))
eval-last-sexp(t)
#<compiled-function (from eval-print-last-sexp) nil "...(13)"
[standard-output terpri eval-last-sexp t] 2 1409437 nil 0x8b6>()
call-interactively(eval-print-last-sexp)
(dispatch-event "[internal]")
This is causing the following practical problem. With an X11 build
and Debug on Signal active, clicking on the menubar causes an
immediate crash due to an assertion failure. A little debugger work
shows the following sequence. Inside of button_item_to_widget_value
(src/gui-x.c), the default-menubar from lisp/menubar-items.el is
evaluated, down to one of the calls to:
(truncate-string-to-width (abbrev-string-to-be-defined nil) 40 nil nil t)
The abbrev-string-to-be-defined call returns "j.\n\n" (which doesn't
seem right; where did that come from?). Evaluating
truncate-string-to-width triggers the args_out_of_range, thereby
unwinding the stack up to the call_trapping_problems call in
menu_item_descriptor_to_widget_value (menubar-x.c). Since retval is
unbound, this function returns NULL, and therefore
compute_menubar_data also returns NULL. This triggers the assert() in
set_frame_menubar (menubar-x.c) just after the call to
compute_menubar_data and *boom* goes XEmacs.

xemacs-gtk plans

Its been using Gtk+2.X for a year now. My target is late Gnome 2 (gtk
2.29) with deprecated code references removed. (see
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/RemoveDeprecatedSymbols/GTK%2B). Then
XEmacs should also compile with Gtk 3. All of the drawing will be done
with cairo and pango. I have just started removing deprecated code, so
there's still a fair amount to redo. I'm tackling images right now.
It's currently good enough for me to use by default. Display is good (as
long as you use mono fonts), crashes are rare. I suspect events are lost
occasionally, the scrollbar can't be dragged and the mouse wheel doesn't
work, so it's not complete yet.
I haven't done much with the implementing widgets. In the longer term I'm
interested in using gnome introspection to implement the FFI bindings so
that all of the gnome libraries will accessible from elisp. Then the
widgets should be easy. :-)

Need help for a hg push
12 years, 10 months
Norbert Koch
Hi!
I need to push the top-level ChangeLog in the package repository. This
fails due to cross-branch stuff. I suppose it would succeed if I could
push only this directory. Is this possible?
Thanks,
norbert.

Updating xemacs.org
12 years, 10 months
Michael Sperber
As you may know, when CVS stopped working on our old Alioth repository,
so did the updates to www.xemacs.org. With some great help from Mats
(thanks!) I was finally able to set up write access to www.xemacs.org
again via the xemacsweb repository on:
https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacsweb/
Right now, when you make a change, you're supposed to rsync the changes
directly to tux. There's a script you can run in
etc/update-tux.sh
that does this for you. Now, this requires ssh access to tux - the
procedure Adrian had put in place for CVS had the ssh key squirreled
away on Alioth. I haven't found an easy way to do that from bitbucket
yet. Right now, I'm having notifications on xemacsweb sent to me, and
I'll update the site if necessary. Suggestions for improvement welcome!
Vin graciously did some work on updating the docs on Mercurial.
Polishing that is also on my list, but I thought I'd make this available
right now so we can breathe some air into the web site.

Bug in cperl-mode.el - unexpanded CVS keyword
12 years, 10 months
Vin Shelton
Greetings!
I recently came upon the following bug.
M-x perl-mode leads to the following backtrace:
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument integerp nil)
substring("$Revision$" nil nil)
(let ((v "$Revision$")) (string-match ":\\s *\\([0-9.]+\\)" v)
(substring v (match-beginning 1) (match-end 1)))
(defvar cperl-version (let (...) (string-match ":\\s *\\([0-9.]+\\)"
v) (substring v ... ...)) "Version of IZ-supported CPerl package this
file is based on.")
load-internal("cperl-mode" nil nil nil undecided)
load("cperl-mode" nil nil nil)
command-execute(perl-mode t)
execute-extended-command(nil)
call-interactively(execute-extended-command)
The reason for this error is that the following keyword is not
expanded in cperl-mode.el:
(defvar cperl-version
(let ((v "$Revision$"))
(string-match ":\\s *\\([0-9.]+\\)" v)
(substring v (match-beginning 1) (match-end 1)))
"Version of IZ-supported CPerl package this file is based on.")
Replacing "$Revision$" with "$Revision: 6.2 $" makes this particular
problem go away, but there are many occurrences of CVS keywords in the
package sources and not all of them are in comments. What should we
do about this?
- Vin

Wanting to upload 2 new packages
12 years, 10 months
steven Mitchell
Byrel and I finished getting a new xpm-mode uploaded to text-modes.
It was obvious where that went because it was an update to an existing
package
by the same name in text modes.
Now there are 2 more packages to upload, new ones that are not an update
to an existing package. Where do we put them?
One is buffer-colors.el, a package that involves an easy method for
changing buffer
colors on the fly, both with a menu interface and with a customize
interface. It also
has a rule-based method of changing colors on new buffers, based on
things you
know about a file, such as file attributes (if it is read only) and by
file-name extensions
(.c or .cpp, for example), or by time (or any other thing you can know
about a file),
or any other thing, such as changing the colors by a time period, every
hour or 2, to
ease eye strain, for example.
We were thinking it might go in edit-utils package--what do you think?
The second file is icon-themes.el, a package to change icons as a "set"
in the
XEmacs menu bar.
There are 5 kinds of icon "sets" or themes so far:
text icons
Oxygen (from KDE)
Open Icon Library
Tango Icons
default icons that come with XEmacs
More icon themes can be added by anybody with an included template. The
three
that are from OSS icon libraries (Oxygen, Tango, and Open icon library)
have
different sizes of icons based on sizes that are distributed in each of
those libraries,
from 32x32 up through 128x128, though not all of those sizes exist in
each of the
distributed libraries. When someone gets libsvg working within XEmacs,
it will be easy to adapt this to using scalable graphics as well as
xpm's and png's that
it does now. We have on the menu under Options-->Icon Themes, though
that can be
changed. Where do you think this package should be put?
The second question is, once we figure out where to upload them, who do
we ask for
permission to upload them at that place (or places)?
I am hoping to get these uploaded pretty quickly since Byrel goes back
to grad school
in less than a week. We have used each of them between 6 and 10 months
here, so
while they are not perfect, we feel they are stable at least as far as
not crashing.
I can upload a copy of the two files if that is needed to tell where
they should go.
Steve Mitchell
