Hi,
Next file is "etc/xemacs.1". According to the AUTHORS section of the
file itself Ben Wing wrote the man page. From looking in the ChangeLog
the following contributions can be deduced:
2010-01-04 Jerry James <james(a)xemacs.org>
2004-12-03 Shyamal Prasad <shyamal(a)member.fsf.org>
2000-09-20 Martin Buchholz <martin(a)xemacs.org>
1998-10-02 Andreas Jaeger <aj(a)arthur.rhein-neckar.de>
1998-07-09 SL Baur <steve(a)altair.xemacs.org>
1998-04-11 Michael Sperber [Mr. Preprocessor] <sperber(a)informatik.uni-tuebingen.de>
1998-01-13 Martin Buchholz <martin(a)xemacs.org>
1997-11-19 SL Baur <steve(a)altair.xemacs.org>
So does this mean that Ben Wing did the writing before 1997?
Anyone of these authors who is known to object to going GPLv3 or
later?
Looking at the actual comments in the ChangeLog might suggest that
some changes are minor and possibly could be viewed as bug fixes more
than contributions. Do you think we should go that deep in the
analysis?
Yours

Hi,
Next in turn is "etc/emacskeys.sco" (and to break the one by one
paradigm I also enclose "etc/emacsstrs.sco" in this question.)
These two files were discussed in the thread:
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/pipermail/xemacs-beta/2010-February/018772...
One of the alternatives was just to delete them which sounds good to
me. The logic being:
Unclear license, unclear copyright and probably not needed -> remove.
These types of files can always be introduced again later and then
with good reasons and with a solid copyright and license.

Hi,
I've been thinking of changing my strategy a bit. Been waiting for
some feedback on the "PROBLEMS" and "etc/Emacs.ad" files. But except
for authors agreeing to release under GPLv3 or later, thank you very
much for that, there hasn't been much feedback on my suggestion on the
change to the files.
My new strategy will be to perform those changes on the assumption my
idea about the change isn't bad enough that anyone complained ;-). It
is in a branch anyway so it is no big deal to change or revert the
changes later if there will be feedback.
I will thus continue with the "Remaining files one by one"-effort to
deal with the last 10!!!! or so files that hasn't been covered yet!
Yes we are that close now!

Hi,
The file PROBLENS describes the different problems there has been over
time to build XEmacs on different platforms. It also starts by saying
it is mostly of historical interest in that XEmacs today does not
require bleeding edge features.
So I guess this file is not as desperately needed to be part of the
distribution then if there would be problems with getting copyright to
be correct.
Similar to the CHANGES-beta the recent contributions can be found by
examining hg log. The full change list goes back further though.
At the time of writing it strikes me that the ChangeLog file as well
can be used for deducing the authors. Maybe even better and easier!? A
pipe grepping through the it gives this list from which creating
appropriate copyrights is easy. (Finding all entries that matches the
regular expression PROBLEM.*:)
Does this list look reasonable? Any one in the list who is known to
object to going GPLv3 or later?

Hi,
Now it is time for yet another text information file. This time is it
"CHANGES-beta". The contents is entirely news about the 21.5
version. So I guess there is no FSF text in there to worry about. "hg
log" provides a bunch of known contributors but there are many also
from when cvs was used.
I guess adding copyright from all contributors from hg log is straight
forward. Do we need to consider contributions before what hg log
provides?

Hi,
I'm getting rather fond if the idea of using the ChangeLogs for
finding the authors for these files, like "etc/Emacs.ad" that don't
have an known license. So here comes the list for etc/Emacs.ad.

Any problems with using this author data as basis for copyrights and
GPLv3 or later as license?

Hello
I am sure this is very trivial but I can't find out how to do it:
set-fill-column is very handy with auto-fill-mode on,
however the line is broken according to set-fill-column.
But how can I insert a newline with the fill-prefix?
thanks
Uwe Brauer
