[Bug: 21.5-b29] Dired unconditionally change frame size
15 years, 4 months
FKtPp
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
I am not sure if somebody else already report this, it is 100%
reproducable on my system (ubuntu 9.04, and scientific linux).
To reproduce:
1. open XEmacs
2. C-x C-d
3. change frame size by click on maximize button
4. <Enter> in minibuffer
Thanks,
FKtPp

xdg-open
15 years, 4 months
Jerry James
A couple of years ago, support for xdg-open was added to
browse-url.el. This has caused some problems in Fedora land, because
xdg-open launches programs that run asynchronously. The upshot is
that XEmacs thinks the helper program has exited, and removes the
temporary file it created for viewing. Meanwhile, the viewer is
finally initialized to the point where it can read the file ... which
is no longer there.
A few suggestions have been floated on how to deal with this. First,
take xdg-open support back out again. Second, stop removing temporary
files; as long as they are in /tmp, the tmpreaper will get them sooner
or later (which, of course, is not feasible across all platforms
supported by XEmacs). Third, ask upstream to make us a new tool or
modify xdg-open to have a synchronous mode (which would require having
synchronous tools to invoke).
Any opinions?

Bug in documentation for font config for menubar and tabs
15 years, 4 months
Raymond Toy
In the xemacs manual (21.5.29), section 21.10 on Xft Font
customization, there is an example of how to set the font for menubars
and tabs:
XEmacs*Tabs.xftFont: Bitstream Vera Sans-16
XEmacs*menubar*xftFont: Bitstream Vera Sans-16
XEmacs.modeline.attributeFont: Bitstream Charter-16
XEmacs.default.attributeFont: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-16
I think this is incorrect for the menubar and tabs, and doesn't work
for me. (The modeline and default works, as shown, though). I use
the following:
XEmacs*Tabs.fcFontName: Bitstream Vera Sans-10
XEmacs*menubar*fcFontName: Bitstream Vera Sans-10
This works for me. (I don't remember where I got that from.)

ProofGeneral is an Emacs-based (IIRC) front-end for several proof
assistants. It would enter as a package. AFAICS, there's no
particular need for it to be restricted to XEmacs 21.5.

For the same reason that LaTeX users want them: you can get the usual
glyphs for Greek letters, logical quantifiers, and operators, instead
of using some verbose transliteration.

The else branch of that conditional is correct.
As to the compatibility in general, here’s how we ended up doing it in Gnus:
http://mid.gmane.org/18509.35990.374622.216796@parhasard.net
You’re right, there is in theory a need for a fillarray analogue.

ProofGeneral, X-Symbol and display-tables
15 years, 4 months
Jerry James
Recently, a ProofGeneral [1] package [2] was submitted to Fedora.
Since I had used ProofGeneral a little bit several years earlier, I
signed up to review this package. Subsequently, a couple of issues
have arisen that I think are of interest to this audience.
First, ProofGeneral contains an X-Symbol [3] fork. Upstream X-Symbol
appears to be dead. Therefore, the ProofGeneral maintainers have
freely made changes to a copy of X-Symbol, and ship that with their
product. The problem is that they didn't do any namespace management,
so the two versions conflict. I have not examined them yet to see if
the ProofGeneral version has altered the API. What we really need is
for someone to step up and start maintaining X-Symbol again, starting
by examining what the ProofGeneral team has done. Any volunteers?
Second, the ProofGeneral compilation succeeds on 21.5.28 and earlier,
but fails on 21.5.29 [2]. The failure is caused by changes to the
char-table/display-table interface. Those tables used to be
represented by vectors, but are now represented by objects. The
make-display-table help suggests adding a couple of wrapper functions.
That suggestion is lacking in two ways: (a) it suggests the use of
defun-when-void, which is not available on Emacs (defun-maybe, in
APEL, is); and (b) those two functions are not sufficient to cover the
space of all manipulations that might be desirable. For example, the
ProofGeneral code does this:
(let* (...
(table (make-display-table)))
(fillarray table "")
...)
XEmacs 21.5.29 doesn't much care for that fillarray. At the very
least, we need to also suggest this:
(defun fill-display-table (value display-table)
"Make every entry in the table map to VALUE."
(if (sequencep display-table)
(fillarray display-table value)
(put-char-table t value display-table)))
... except I'm not at all sure the else branch of that conditional is
correct. If not, would a knowledgeable person please help me correct
it?

This was fixed, and I confirm it is in calendar 1.38...
The changelog entry looks like:
2008-09-27 Jeff Miller <jmiller(a)cablespeed.com>
* appt.el (appt-delete): use substring, not substring-no-properties
* cal-compat.el (cal-fit-window-to-buffer): forgot to call
cal-fit-window-to-buffer in case where fit-window-to-buffer is
available. It is in 21.5.28 now.

It seemed that I build my XEmacs without guage support, so the indicator
always displayed in minibuffer as lots of dots.
I'll rebuild my XEmacs to see if the issue still there..

Need help from Ubuntu user on issue430 (AMD64, XEmacs 21.4, Mule)
15 years, 4 months
Stephen J. Turnbull
We have a crash which has been confirmed by at least two Ubuntu users
with AMD64 processors, using Ubuntu's xemacs21-mule 21.4.21-1ubuntu3.1
(for Hardy). See http://tracker.xemacs.org/XEmacs/its/issue430 for
details.
I'm look for somebody with a fairly recent Ubuntu/AMD64 system who can
help with debugging this. I'd be happy to give advice via IRC or
similar, but what needs to be done at this point is fairly
straightforward:
(1) verify the bug using the recipes in the tracker on a vanilla
Ubuntu installation;
(2) check to see if the bug occurs for xemacs -vanilla and (for the
Cyrillic case) xemacs -no-autoloads;
(3) rebuild XEmacs 21.4 with the Ubuntu patches but using the normal
XEmacs build process instead of debian/rules, and check if the bug
occurs; and
(4) rebuild with Ubuntu patches but with -g -Os (instead of -Owhatever),
and check.
Of course all of the runtime tests should be done under the debugger
to compare backtraces of the crashes.
Steve
