So, did you tried 'apt-get install gcc'?
In case your system had borken dependency problem, you may also want to try 'apt-get -f install'

No I don't have them

Unfortunately it did not help.

The point is I am on (K)ubuntu and I want to use their xemacs and not
to build me own, especially since they managed to have mule/nomule and
the same time. But on they other hand this is feature I need quite a
bit so I might test it. May be I do that, and then try to convince Vin
and the debian manager to apply it.

Vin, has anybody tested that patch in 21.4, and if so
are you willing to apply it?

Did him have all necessary gcc package installed? I suspect that he didn't have necessary xorg header either.
Maybe 'apt-get install xorg-dev' will help...

Please do. Also specify exactly the configure command you used, and
the value of CFLAGS and LDFLAGS from your environment. (These may all
be in the config.log, if so you don't need to repeat them.)
Thanks!

XEmacs and toolbars over a slow link
16 years, 10 months
Raymond Toy
Any one ever try running xemacs over a slow link? Once in a while, I
connect to my home box over a broadband cable connection. The uplink
speed is about 300 kbps (downlink is 3-5 Mbps).
XEmacs itself is really quite usable over this link, except for one
thing. The toolbar keeps redrawing itself over and over everytime I
change buffers.
Is that supposed to happen? It takes a good 5 sec or more to redraw
the default toolbar.
Of course, I rarely use the toolbar, so I can just turn it off via the
menu (which works just fine at this slow speed).

21.4.21 and font-lock-add-keywords
16 years, 10 months
John Kuhns
Hi XEmacs team -
So I installed xemacs 21.4.21 today and tried out the new
font-lock-add-keywords method. But, for some reason it's still not
working for me. Is there something I need to set to get it working?
Here's what I tried:
(add-hook 'lisp-mode-hook
(lambda () (font-lock-add-keywords 'lisp-mode
'(("\\<\\(then\\|else\\|@key\\|@optional\\)\\>" .
font-lock-keyword-face)))))
Which I want to result in highlighting standalone keywords. For example,
@key should be hightlighted in this line:
(defun foo (arg1 @key arg2) ... )
Thanks,
-John Kuhns

Samba and XEmacs and read-only
16 years, 10 months
QZ
Searching the forums it appears this problem is not new but perhaps it has been assumed to no longer be an issue. Tonight I tried to edit a file served by Samba with XEmacs 21.4.20, 21.4.21, and 21.5-b28. Each attempt and each version yielded the same result. I.e. XEmacs would open the file read-only ignoring true permissions. After opening the file read-only, I would M-X toggle-read-only, make my changes, and save. This work around unfortunately does not help if the file does not exist as XEmacs refuses to make files in directories served by Samba. It seems to think that all directories are read-only.
For what it is worth, this is not a problem with GNU Emacs 22.1. (I've been using XEmacs for years and would hate to switch now though :( )
If there is any more information that would be helpful or any work around please contact me.

Right, that’s the problem. A temporary workaround would be adding the line
(define-key global-map "\C-x\C-a" nil)
at the end of your ~/.xemacs/init.el ; the correct thing to do is to work
out what’s binding that key to auto-fill-mode, and either disable it, or
decide that it has priority and move the PDB binding to something else.
