Carbon.

I’ve synced the carbon2 branch with both the trunk and Andrew Choi’s current
code. There may be some things I’ve missed--that was a lot of syncing--but
the code compiles now and looks and works much as expected. Please test, but
do not distribute binaries.
To get it, do:
cvs -d :pserver:cvs@cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs login
(it will ask for your password, which is cvs ) followed by
cvs -z3 -d :pserver:cvs@cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs \
checkout -d xemacs-carbon2 -r carbon2 xemacs
To build, once the checkout is done:
cd xemacs-carbon2/carbon && sh < build-app.sh

more into contact with civilization, Dobrinton was bitten by a dog which was
assumed to be mad, though it may only have been indiscriminating. (Saki)

xemacs 21.5 b28 segfaults upon exit on aix 5.2

Hi,
just to let you know:
GNU gdb 6.6
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain
conditions.
Type "show copying" to see the conditions.
There is absolutely no warranty for GDB. Type "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "powerpc-ibm-aix5.2.0.0"...
warning: core file may not match specified executable file.
ptrace ldinfo: No such process.

WARNING: Unable to auto-save your files properly.
Some or all may in fact have been auto-saved.
Fatal error (11).
Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.
Your version of XEmacs was distributed with a PROBLEMS file that may
describe
your crash, and with luck a workaround. Please check it first, but do
report
the crash anyway.
Please report this bug by invoking M-x report-emacs-bug, or by selecting
`Send Bug Report' from the Help menu. If that won't work, send ordinary
email to `xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org'. *MAKE SURE* to include this entire
output from this crash, especially including the Lisp backtrace, as well as
the XEmacs configuration from M-x describe-installation (or equivalently,
the file `Installation' in the top of the build tree).
*Please* try *hard* to obtain a C stack backtrace; without it, we are
unlikely
to be able to analyze the problem. Locate the core file produced as a
result
of this crash (often called `core' or `core.<process-id>', and located in
the directory in which you started XEmacs or your home directory), and type
gdb /usr/local/bin/xemacs core
then type `where' at the debugger prompt. No GDB on your system? You may
have DBX, or XDB, or SDB. (Ask your system administrator if you need help.)
If no core file was produced, enable them (often with `ulimit -c unlimited')
in case of future recurrance of the crash.

Warning:
Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This
facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->
"Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the
list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
To disable this warning and stick with the old behavior, you can explicitly
initialize `mail-user-agent' to 'sendmail-user-agent .

I’ve modified it to work on GNU Emacs 21.2.1 on X11. Redisplay of the
characters fails there, but it may work on other platforms.

Yes, perhaps, but that’s also consistent with the other functions that do
this sort of thing. See #'morse-region, #'encode-coding-region,
#'fill-region and so on.

As I said in my mail to Adian: that is the main part of the code
(seems less sophisticated than yours, though)
(defun utf8symbol-translate-conventions (trans-tab)

together with the call

I even thought of adding the each texstring \; and then kill the char
backwards, but that looks highly inefficient.

It seems to me both syntaxes could co-exist because of the added colon
in the unified syntax. Am I wrong?
> There was also the suggestion that a unified syntax shall be closed to

I see it was discussed on xemacs-beta. Was there ever any progress on
the discussion with GNU Emacs?
> But before we go into the discussion, the Tramp synchronization with

Yet one more issue I hadn't kept current on. While I dislike the v3
switch for the same reason Stephen has, I can't say I have any concrete
objection, either, and I can't find any statement in the mailing lists
that say anybody else does. (I may be wrong, though.)
Meanwhile, this message here:
http://www.sxemacs.org/list-archives/html/sxemacs-devel/2007-08/msg00003....
has this:

Could we work around this by having Tramp not be auto-activated, but
requiring some explicit (require 'tramp) or (turn-on-tramp) or something?

[Bug: 21.5-b28] mswindows-shell-execute failure when shortcuts are symlinks
16 years, 10 months
Pete Forman
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
XEmacs started with:
"d:\Program Files\XEmacs\xemacs-21.5-b28\i586-pc-win32\xemacs.exe" -q
Two of the following commands in *scratch* failed.
(mswindows-shell-execute "open" "http://www.xemacs.org/")
(mswindows-shell-execute "open" "c:\\")
t
(mswindows-shell-execute "open" "c:")
(mswindows-shell-execute "explore" "c:\\")
t
mswindows-shortcuts-are-symlinks
t
If mswindows-shortcuts-are-symlinks is set to nil then all the
external processes start successfully.
Aidan Kehoe reports that a "permission denied" error masks any
prospective "file not found" error. I have seen similar errors
using "cmd /c start" either as a command from "!" in dired, or
in a Cygwin window outside of emacs. I cannot currently
reproduce it.
Is there another lisp function that might exercise the C
realpath and similar functions to improve our diagnosis?

byte compiler problem: miscompiling emacs-w3m
16 years, 10 months
Mike FABIAN
Recent versions of XEmacs apparently miscompile emacs-w3m.
For details please see:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=352331
Reproducible like this:
xemacs -q
M-x w3m RET
=> Invalid read syntax: Undefined symbol label, 1
The problem disappears after deleting the .elc files of emacs-w3m:
rm /usr/share/xemacs/site-packages/lisp/w3m/*.elc
The problem is there in a CVS checkout of XEmacs 21.5.28 from of
20071220.
Dieter Klünter reports that it does *not* happen with
XEmacs 21.5 (beta28) "fuki" (+CVS-20071205)
i.e. apparently a change between 20071205 and 20071220 broke it.
