[Bug: 21.5-b28] undeleteable backup file?
17 years, 1 month
FKtPp
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
While using tramp XEmacs produced a odd filename looks like:
/[pscp/my.host.com]/home/website/config:
total 44
drwxrwx--- 4 fktpp fktpp 4096 Oct 9 19:41 .
drwxrwx--- 16 fktpp fktpp 4096 Oct 9 19:38 ..
-rw-rw-r-- 1 fktpp fktpp 51 Oct 9 19:38 somefile.yml
-rw-rw-r-- 1 fktpp fktpp 1549 Oct 9 19:41 \#boot.rb\#
-rw-rw---- 1 fktpp fktpp 1549 Sep 17 00:11 boot.rb
-rw-rw-r-- 1 fktpp fktpp 1245 Oct 9 19:38 anotherfile.yml
Note the dired output. The file \#boot.rb\# is undeleteable, at least
in tramp-dired mode.

In this case they are. If a language environment uses a feature that we
*cannot* provide, in the normal scheme of things, then it is broken.

We can influence whether the input methods are available a lot more
comprehensively than we can whether ispell is available.

I don’t disagree with you on this. I do think that this particular test is
more important than the conceptual cleanliness of the core/packages
distinction, given that *the bug it tests for was ignored for eight
years*. Most open source coders don’t care about internationalisation, which
is part of why Microsoft has won the OS wars, and this is important.

I would love to have the latter as an option, but 21.4 doesn’t seriously
support UTF-8, and that’s necessary for the Darwin-specific file name stuff
to work; also, I am really not in a hurry to add
posix-charset-to-coding-system-hash to 21.4. Maybe it’ll work, maybe it
won’t.

Yes it is. The language environments are dumped; they’re in the binary; if
they are incoherent, they are an error in the binary.

Skip-Test-Unless is what happens when the packages are not installed, and
the user is to interpret it then as meaning that all is well. That conflicts
strongly with people interpreting it in other contexts as meaning that it is
an error.

Not any clearer than the current test suite failure.

The user doesn’t care that much about the input method. The user’s keyboard
generates the characters that the user uses already [except of course when
the user is using a TTY and the high bit is interpreted as meta!] because
the user uses other applications with those characters too. This check is
mainly about the quailty of *our* code.
And Christ, a test failure that is trivially resolved is not that fucking
important.

No. Both variables are independent from each other. I just have seen
that you did configure `tramp-auto-save-directory' for a local
directory; and I did recommend to do the same for
`tramp-bkup-backup-directory-info'.

Then you need to reduce the password requests from Tramp. Which access
method do you use? An external method like "scp"? Change it to "ssh".
Or set `password-cache-expiry' to nil.
Best regards, Michael.

No, here they should. Those tests are there because we had had one of the
language environments specify latin-5-prefix as its input method in 1999;
but that input method first appeared in the packages in May of *this year*.
If the test succeeds when a referenced input method is not included in the
packages, then it’s not actually checking the consistency of the language
environments.
If you have a suggestion for a way to check for this error without a
dependency on the packages being current, please to be coming forward with
it.
