I receive the following compile error:

I mistyped in my last reply. I did NOT see "a bignum" in the output,
and I should NOT have. So it looks like the problem is something to do
with my --enable-union-type setting. On the G5, if I remove that, I get
a working bignum-enabled XEmacs. I haven't tried again on my G4, but
the compilation I tried last summer (gcc4.00) failed with any
configuration using bignum. The G5 uses gcc4.01, which warns infewer
places and fails less often than did gcc4.00.

Suggested enhancement for entering Unicode characters

Entering characters using quoted-insert restricts you to three octal
digits, according to its description. read-quoted-char-radix allows
decimal or hexadecimal digits to be used instead.
The code number to be entered is a bit opaque to me beyond the range
of ASCII, or is it 8859-1. Unicode codepoints would be more
meaningful.
This patch simplisitically allows Unicode to be used. It ought to be
enabled by a new custom variable to keep the current behavior OOTB.
It should be reasonably safe as unicode-to-char is described as falling
back to int-to-char when there is no international support.

RFC: Do we need to keep configure, src/depend, etc in CVS?

Many projects do not keep maintainer-generated files like configure
and src/depend in CVS. CVS users are expected to have tools like
autoconf (to generate configure) and perl (to run the script that
generates src/depend) available.
Would it be an inconvenience to anyone if we CVS remove'd these files
from the XEmacs repository? Of course the beta and stable tarballs
would continue to provide such files.
It's not obvious that there would be a great advantage to do so. But
I'm considering providing a bootstrap.mk file or a script so that you
can do "make -f bootstrap.mk" and get all of the generated files
updated. make beta could depend on this. This might make the build
process somewhat more reliable.

gmp ＠4.1.4_2 (active)
I don't think the error is in gmp itself but in some part of the loadup
that is getting a value it does not expect as a result of bignum
support. I think the backtrace might lead to finding that place in the
code. On the G5 (iMac) the problem triggers when --enable-union-type
is configured in. On my older powerbook, removing that directive did
not fix the problems with the earlier version of gmp.
If I get time, I will try a compile on the G4 machine with the new gmp
version installed to see if --enable-union-type is the problem.
However, if it is, then does that mean that the real problem is an
alignment error that gets triggered when an object is referenced that is
not as it is expected? If so, could that point to something lower
level?

The standards say that applications should interpret these keysyms as

represent MALTESE CROSS), but unfortunately the current version of XEmacs
has no support for many of those characters in its internal encoding, and

remain unbound.
See the documentation for `unicode-to-char' for one technique if you have an
urgent need for support for one of those characters--you probably don't,
most of the widely-used characters have mappings in the internal XEmacs
encoding--otherwise, wait until we ship a version with an internal encoding
based on Unicode.

I volunteered to take over; apparently, I'm the only person to step
forward.
I'm a little nervous about the time commitment, and I'm not a strong
Lisp programmer. So if someone else wants to take the position, that's
fine with me.
The current situation is that Steve is putting together a cheat sheet to
help me get started. There are a couple things I can do in the mean
time (e.g., pull down the XEmacs packages from CVS and try to build
them), but I haven't gotten to them yet.

[Bug: 21.4.19] XEmacs Sounds Modulate System Volume Under Alsa and FC4

Dear Bug Team!
Everytime XEmacs plays a sound, the Alsa mixer volume is increased
momentarily for the duration of the sound (e.g., drum, whip, etc.).
This causes the volume from other PCM music sources (e.g., the xmms
player) that may be active at the time to be modulated up and
down. The amount of the volume change is significant and is very
irritating. This behaviour also makes the sound XEmacs is playing very
loud, in addition to increasing the volume (momentarily) of the other
PCM sound sources.
Specifically, if you start the gnome-volume-control application to
monitor the mixer settings, you will find under the playback tab there
are two volume sliders: Master and PCM. When XEmacs emits a sound, you
can visually see the PCM volume being momentarily increased. (If the
sound is short, a change in the slider position may not happen every
time the sound is played - try it several times).
If you could look into this and repair it, or give me suggestions
on how it can be avoided, I would be thankful.

Hallo,
Funny thing. I have a file named Test_No_Archiv.sql in a directory named
"SQL-Skripte - Überprüfung". When I Drag & Drop the file from Windows Explorer
to xemacs, xemacs does not open the file, but rather displays error message
"Memory exhausted" in the command buffer and would crash when continuing with another command.
Opening the file via C-x C-f works as well as with C-x d (dired). Also, when I renamed the diretory to "SQL-Skripte -
Ueberpruefung", drag&Drop would work fine. So, I dare make the guess, that
those Umlauts are the problem.
