XEmacs crash on startup
17 years, 12 months
sandor kovacs
Hi,
I've been trying to solve this on my own, but can't think of anything else.
I also tried searching for this error, but found no solution offered.
I apologize if there is actually a solution I should have found.
Here is the problem:
I upgraded from Kubuntu Draper to Edgy and something happened to (X)Emacs fonts.
When I try to launch XEmacs, it exits with the error message attached.
I also attached the gdb output. The core itself is about 10MB, so I am
not sending that, but I can if you think that helps.
The problem occurs in whatever way I try to launch XEmacs, except that
it runs fine when invoked by 'xemacs -nw'.
Just to test, I tried to launch Emacs. That one runs, but the text is
garbled, so I suppose the problem occurs there as well.
I tried reinstalling both emacs and xemacs. I did that in various ways
using one of kubuntu's package managers. I tried to force installing
dependencies, but according to all of them, every dependency is
satisfied.
I also tried installing from the tarball on xemacs.org, but ran it to
some problem that I could not resolve. Please see the attached
"configure_output" file for the just that. I read the suggestion at
the end, but could not figure out what option I would need or what I
am missing.
I posted pretty much the same message on kubuntuforums.net yesterday,
but so far received no replies.
I would very much appreciate any help, because (X)Emacs is essential
to my work!!
Thanks very much!
-Sandor

[Bug: 21.4.19] gnuserv-start
17 years, 12 months
François Jouve
Dear Bug Team!
I used to launch "xemacs -unmapped" once at the beginning of my
session, with the option (gnuserv-start) in my config file.
Then I used "gnuclient".
Now (for some months) it does not work in every situations.
Sometimes, when xemacs is launched, I get the message
"Gnuserv process exited; restart with 'M-x gnuserv-start'"
Of course it doesn't work and gnuserv can never be run.
After a lot of investigations, on different linux versions, this is
what I found :
* On very old versions of linux (Red hat 9), everything is ok not matter
what
the network status is.
* On more recent configurations (fedora 2, 4, 5) the situation is the
following:
- No network or cable network up (ethernet eth0) : gnuserv fails.
- Wireless network up (eth1) : gnuserv starts and everything is
running like before (gnuclient is ok).
- If the network is shut after a successful launch of gnuserv,
gnuclient is still working, even without network connection.
- The problem does not come from my personal configuration of
emacs/xemacs since I have experienced the very same comportment
without any personal configuration files.
Searching the internet, I found that this kind of bug has been
reported for years in various flavours, but I did not find any answer
or workaround available.
Thank you for your answers.
Best regard
F.Jouve

[Bug: 21.4.13] gnuserv configuration
17 years, 12 months
Laurelin of Middle Earth
Dear Bug Team!
Hello, this is probably more in the line of a "documentation
enhancement" request than an honest-to-goodness bug, but...
My situation: I use gnuserv/gnuclient. My site's Security Gurus are
complaining about the fact that gnuserv is listening for incoming
connections on an open port, and would like me to somehow configure
gnuserv so that it only listens for connections on "localhost". For
myself, this is fine -- I never edit files on remote hosts or from
remote nodes (I use gnuserv/gnuclient only to speed-up the startup
time). But I have no idea how to do this configuration!
I've read the FAQ, I've looked at the configuration options for
gnuserv, and nothing looks like what I need. In particular, lots of
the documents refer to the "gnuserv.h" and/or "gnuserv.el" files --
neither of which I have. (I have a "gnuserv.elc" file, but that
doesn't help).
It looks to me as if what I *want* to do is to force the use of unix
sockets rather than internet sockets. Is this something that I can do
without somehow finding a different build of xemacs (or rolling my
own)? Is it a configuration option, or must it be built in at compile
time?
I hope I've explained this clearly enough.
Thanks for any help,
Lauri Loebel Carpenter

Subject: [Bug: 21.4.19] Xemacs hangs on interrupt to Inferior GDB
Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2006 16:08:24 -0500
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
An inferior gdb buffer can cause xemacs to hang if the processing being
debugged is interrupted from xemacs by C-c C-c while it is writing a lot of
output to stdout/stderr which is appearing in the buffer. No xemacs commands
will work if this happenes, to regain control of xemacs, one must kill gdb
from a shell somewhere else. Killing gdb allows xemacs to recover and one can
then kill then buffer as normal.

Yeah, I got the difference between #1 and #2. I'd like to keep option
#2 open if possible, which is why I sent along the diffs. BTW, I
couldn't get option #2 to work for me, but since you're going to issue
a revised patch, I wasn't going to sweat the details for the time
being.

RE: Full Unicode Pathnames

Ben,
One malingering issue:
MessageBoxIndirect changes it declaration in VC7 in a cosmetic way that required removing an LP from the comment. I'm waiting to see if someone with VC6 can still run the script with the LP removed.

i'm sure this is documented in the internals manual.
but for calling a pathname function, use PATHNAME_CONVERT_OUT; see
mswindows_access (const Ibyte *path, int mode) in win32.c. note that
the qxe() wrapper functions take Extbyte * in place of LPTCHAR or LPCHAR
or LPWCHAR or any such things.
for more general strings, use C_STRING_TO_TSTR.
conversion the other way uses TSTR_TO_C_STRING or PATHNAME_CONVERT_IN.
note that all of these macros use alloca() to record the temporary space
for the string onto to stack, so no need to free (but values disappear
after the function returns).
