XEmacs without pdump would allow to add
"../xemacs-packages/lisp/vc/vc-hooks.elc"
"../lisp/wid-edit.elc"
"../xemacs-packages/lisp/xemacs-base/comint.elc"
to `site-packages' file and dump them during build. With pdump
dumping prints:
Undumpable object type : extent-info
On some platforms (including one described below) `configure.in'
comment says that glibc 2.3.1 seems to hose unexec, so enabling pdump
is required for building. Perhaps it should check for glibc version
since my one is earlier than 2.3.1.

I noticed this the other day while building XEmacs...
Loading /usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.5-b12/i586-pc-linux/modules/auto-autoloads...
...doesn't look right to me. Why are we loading an installed file at
build time?
Jerry, could you please fix this up.

shell buffer / tcsh command line length limit in RH 8?

I reported this bug to Red Hat on the assumption that this was a bug in
tcsh or readline, but I suppose it's equally likely that it's a bug in
how xemacs is dealing with ptys (since the bug does not occur when
running tcsh in gnome-terminal.) I also assume they will completely
ignore my report without even looking at it, since emacs is involved.
So I'll report it to you guys as well:

Since upgrading from RH 7.2 to RH 8.0, I can no longer compose long
command lines in tcsh when running in an XEmacs *shell* buffer. I don't
know whether this is a bug in tcsh, or in readline, or what, but it does
not happen with bash.
It's not merely truncating the command line -- it's also apparently
leaving the un-read characters on the input buffer, and then
interpreting them as commands afterward! This is potentially
disasterous, and could easily lead to loss of files, if there were
redirections or something on the command line.
This still happens after setting $LANG to C, so it's apparently not some
Unicode locale BS, as so many recent problems are.
Watch what happens (line wrapping and blank lines inserted for
readability):

When one selects File Open from the menu , a PC XEmacs opens a PC XEmacs dialog box, rather than dired or prompting in the minibuffer. However, other methods of calling find-file uses the mini-buffer or dired. Is there another way to force XEmacs to use the PC dialog box when called from a function?

I think that fishing around for something that looks like the current
directory would be sufficient. It doesn't have to be perfect, just an
improvement on tracking 'cd' commands.

It doesn't always work, for example in a shell buffer running tcsh
the prompt shows:
avised＠itdev1>
I hit M-RET and this changes to
avised＠itdev1> dirs
->
and the status line says 'No such directory: /u/avised/->'.
It seems that 'dirs' requires just as much knowledge of the shell as
looking at the prompt string - how do you know what it is going to
print?

Ok, thanks for the clarifications, folks. I'm trying to remember all
the places that need to be touched when a new package is added.
One thing not mentioned is etc/PACKAGES in core. What's the status of
that? Seems terribly outdated to me (both 21.[45] say "Up-to-date as of
May 15, 2001" which probably is true). Should it just be removed?
man/xemacs/packages.texi is missing both hyperbole and oo-browser in
21.[45].
Also, README.(HYPERBOLE|OO-BROWSER) in 21.4 is not up to date with
21.5. But it is very much possible that I've missed an already sent
patch.
etc/package-index.LATEST* is updated just before a core release, I
guess.
Eek. Far too many places to update.

Yes, that was exactly it. When I display the scrollbars the wheel
works.
So the bug report is really that the mouse wheel doesn't do something
sensible when scrollbars are not displayed. Perhaps they could be
active but invisible, or something.
Thanks - I think the wasted screen space is a fair price to get a
working mouse wheel, for now.

Two questions:
1) Am I missing something or is the auto-revert library not part of XEmacs?
I believe that it is a part of FSF Emacs but I just realized that I have
been running it as a private library, not as part of XEmacs. If it is not
part of XEmacs, why is that and what can I do about it?
2) I posted a bug about the top-level Info directory. The problem is
triggered by global-auto-revert mode. Apparently, the info mode buffer is
reverted from a copy on disk and it blows away the directory. Anyone know
anything about this?

Yup. I've always wondered why it doesn't look at the shell prompt
instead (at least if the prompt is set to include the current
directory), but anyway...

I can confirm that the patch fixes part of the problem; now if I am
in directory 'c:\program files' I can type 'cd xem', hit Tab, and it
is correctly completed to 'xemacs'.
However tab-completion in general doesn't work properly, for example
from the root directory typing 'cd "program files\xem' and hitting Tab
does not work. But thanks for the patch.
