- What happened.
i started xemacs as usual,
office% DISPLAY=:0 xemacs -f gnuserv-start&
then i got home without closing xemacs, so that, at home, i did
home% ssh me＠office
office% gnuclient -nw
with the intention of using VM to read my mail, but i found that all
the window management breakage in ttys that was recently fixed
showed again... you know, all the "no window to the side of this
window" stuff, the windows that are resized smaller and smaller, the
cursor that lands outside of managed windows...
NB windows' management in a emacs frame works fine (uh, not quite)
when i start xemacs from a tty, the mess represented itself _only_
when i attached, using a tty, to a gnuserv connected to a xemacs
process running under X
the "uh, not quite" refers of course to VM, that, for me, is jumpy
and unpleasant to use (screen redraws, glitches, anything bad) also
when used in X --- i suppose that VM does much more, or just does
different, than other packages when it comes to moving windows
around, exposing glitches in current windows code

Dear Bug Team!
I'm trying to get ispell to work by downloading a windows-native
ispell that I got by following a link from the XEmacs site. It reports
itself as version 3.1.20. When I try to execute it from XEmacs it
refuses and says it needs 3.1.12 or higher. It seems like x.20
should satisfy that, but it just stops and no spell checking
happens.
I've never tried to get this to work on a Windows box before and I don't
know where the
problem might be. Is there an easy fix?

I recently started working at Sun Microsystems. This job is likely to
keep me quite busy, so you are not likely to see me being an active
XEmacs contributor in the future. Now I'm mostly just an ordinary
user with a Real Job. You may see occasional patches from me relating
to getting XEmacs to work on whatever OSes I use for my work (Hint:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html). I have unsubscribed
from most xemacs mailing lists, but remain on xemacs-admin and
xemacs-review.
Because I want an XEmacs that actually works, I will be ignoring 21.5
for the forseeable future. I have finally gotten to the point where
I'm pretty happy with 21.4. Daiki's process fix and my redisplay
speedup patch made a big difference for me. The only bugs remaining
in 21.4 that affect me personally are some hard-to-fix redisplay
glitches, but they are easy to live with. For completeness, there are
a few things I should work on, because it's my work to finish.
(I'm thinking Berkeley DB support here).
Here are my recommendations for future XEmacs development:
I don't know how anyone can live with the hideous progress guages on
Unix. Turn them off by default. All my xemacsen are built
--without-widgets.
Some other experimental features could be turned off by default as
well. I'm thinking esd here.
The idea behind the test suite was to never release an xemacs that
didn't pass 100% on all tested platforms. I recommend that you don't
tolerate any test failures. If necessary, introduce the concept of
"expected" failure. I believe there has been no release of 21.5 that
has met my release criteria since the last one I did the release
engineering for.
The work on packages is not yet finished. It's still far too easy for
a non-user system administrator to install an XEmacs which is
essentially useless because the packages aren't installed. I am a
believer in "batteries included".
If I were to become a major contributor again, I might adopt Linus'
model. Let everyone keep their own tree, and no one gets guaranteed
write access to my tree. XEmacs has been hurt by a too lenient commit
access for core contributors.

If you mean tabbar.el mentioned here recently it groups on major mode
without a size limitation: there is a scroll button on each side.
tabbar.el produces a modeline specification since the GNU Emacs header-line
feature is basically a second modeline displayed at the top of the window.
How could one put a modeline format in a gutter in XEmacs?

I don't know about OpenCM, but subversion is unlikely to be better
than CVS on branching. Anything that tries to emulate CVS's file

Well, I've heard from several people that it put an end to the claim
that "Linus doesn't scale"; apparently Linus + bitkeeper is scaling
nicely. ;-)

Flaming about non-free-ness as such is not a problem as far as I'm
concerned as long as the vendor is trustworthy. Larry McVoy has
proved that point to my satisfaction (my personal opinion only).
However, the source is also closed, and the "no competition" clause in
the BitKeeper license would force a nasty choice on at least one board
member, who is a sometime prcs developer.
Someday arch (http://arch.fifthvision.net/) may be a viable
alternative to bitkeeper. Design is nice, documentation is good
(considering the early stage of the code itself).

The contents of the Buffers menu are as follows:

However, in the tabs, *Warnings* and Installation are grouped together,
and *scratch* is grouped with no other buffer.
*Warnings* and Installation are in Fundamental mode, br is Mail Fill
Abbrev (the build report I just sent) and *scratch* is Lisp Interaction.
It seems the tabs are grouped by buffer mode, but the Buffers menu is
organized in some other way (looks like by mode, but with the special
case that *...* buffers are grouped together). I expect there to be only
one grouping, so the behavior XEmacs is showing is kind of confusing.
This might not even be a bug; maybe it's the intended behavior. If so,
what is the rationale?

[Bug: 21.5-b11] No SGML menu File Options or User Options

When I try to change the SGML options using Options->GSML->File Options
or Options->GSML->User Options I see a message in the echo area saying
"void-function sgml-make-options-menu", and no sub-menus are
displayed. I believe all the SGML stuff is installed correctly. I

[Bug: 21.4.12] color problems

Dear Bug Team!
I recently compiled xemacs-21.4.12 with GTK support on solaris 2.8
using GCC 3.2.2. When I run xemacs, the window background is always
black. If I run xemacs, under VNC server, everything seems to be
fine. The difference is that the VNC server is started with a
depth of 24, whereas the default depth on the default display is 8.
Is there anything I can do to fix the color problems? I cannot
change the default depth of the X server.
