I am trying to do some profiling (using gprof) and I have to hack
src/Makefile by hand every time to do it, due to the linking tricks used
there. I'm finally getting annoyed enough about this that I'm looking
around for a reason for the current behavior. The relevant changelog
entries appear to be in ChangeLog.1:
1998-03-28 SL Baur <steve(a)altair.xemacs.org>
* s/linux.h: For simplicity, do not use standard linking because
it is deadly with new GCC.
1997-06-09 Steven L Baur <steve(a)altair.xemacs.org>
* s/linux.h: Can't use ORDINARY_LINK in linux until usage of -lPW
is determined more sensibly.
Interestingly, some old mail archives show that Martin Buchholz tried to
change Linux to use ORDINARY_LINK on 1997-06-09, so Steve Baur didn't
wait long to change it back. Unfortunately, I don't see a message from
him explaining *why* he changed it back.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I hack src/Makefile to make it do
essentially what ORDINARY_LINKING would do (plus -pg, of course), and it
works for me with RedHat's "gcc 2.96". But then again, I don't know
what the issues are with "-lPW", either. There is a note about avoiding
it in s/linux.h, but that doesn't help me understand, unfortunately.

Hello,
as most of you probably have noticed by now, I and Peter Brown
[rendhalver] have taken over the XEmacs package patch tender's job from
Steve Youngs.
For now, we've split the job so that I will be mostly doing the
patching, and Peter takes care of building and packaging.
Please note that we have big boots to fill here. I don't have Steve's
experience with XEmacs, so patience, please :) I might be asking
"dummy" questions every now and then, and patch reviews and guidance
from all experienced elisp hackers are more than welcome.
On a side note; I'm on vacation ATM, and my online time will be pretty
much limited at least until next Monday, starting from this evening
GMT+3. So don't expect much activity from me during that time; I'll
ping when I'm back.

Further questions about Customize menu hang

I have narrowed the problem down further and suffered several Windows
blue screen events in the process.
The hang happens when a subprocess is invoked to complete a defvar
while loading libraries. The compile library invokes find to
determine how best to use find and grep. pcl-cvs invokes cvs to
obtain its version. I have determined that the fork succeeds and also
the execve. I'm still too confused by the subprocess support to get
much futher. The Cygwin strace does seems to show that the SIGCHLD
cannot be delivered.
One other interesting observation is that this does not happen with
21.4.8 Windows [3]. Both are using the same package hierarchy.
I'm hoping this relates to some of the other subprocess problems that
are seen in 21.5

manual gives wrong keys for line and char modes of term mode

In char mode, typing C-c c sends a "c" character to the terminal. C-c l
gives a message in the echo area saying how many lines the page
has.
In line mode, both keys above say that the key is "not defined".
A different part of the info documentation, xemacs.info-16, gives a
description which is a lot closer to being correct. It says:
> `C-c C-k'
> Switch to line mode. Do nothing if already in line mode.

> Switch to char mode. Do nothing if already in char mode.
In the documentation, please swap the letters "k" and "j". I.e.,
