Hi,
XEmacs 21.5-b8 just plain crashes when I attach a gnuclient.
I am willing to test patches.

font-lock-add-keywords substitute in XEmacs?

Hello XEmacs developers,
First, let me apologise if this is the wrong list. I couldn't find a
user's list on http://www.xemacs.org/Lists/index.html
I have a minor mode that needs to add font-lock highlighting keywords
while the mode is in effect. In Emacs, I use the command
font-lock-add-keywords to add keywords for the curren buffer, but it is
not available on XEmacs 21.4. Is there a method to do this in XEmacs?
I have tried the following:
(put 'debian-bug-minor-mode 'font-lock-defaults '(debian-bug-font-lock-keywords))
but it didn't change anything in the appearance of the buffer.
I'd be interested to know if I'm doing anything wrong.

When running a shell in Xemacs the colors do not show up! This is
especially crippling when trying to compile programs in Xemacs. Please
fix this disturbance

Dear Bug Team!
gnus-signature-face was particularry annoying on tty
(underlined... bleah) so i decided to customize it
customize diplayed for me to edit the specs for the face used on X, so
i told it to show all specifications for the different displays
next step, xemacs uses all my cpu, garbage collects like mad, and
eventually gets killed after 3-4 minutes of fervent prayers
i saw an _imposing_ lisp backtrace, but i have not managed to save
it...
if you are interested in fixing this, i could start xemacs under a
logger and send you the lisp backtrace, or kill it with SIGDUMP (?)
and get a C backtrace... let me know...

Autoload cookies with derived modes?

There's something hairy about autoload cookies with derived modes. An
example of this would be php-mode.el from prog-modes. The version
currently in CVS doesn't work as it should out of the box, when doing a
"xemacs some_file.php" with it, I get:
Symbol's value as variable is void: php-font-lock-keywords-3
The solution of course is not to add autoload cookies to all
def(var|un)'s and the like. Adding (require 'php-mode) to init.el would
help, but it's not "out of the box".
One workaround is to put an autoload cookie into a dummy autoload,
instead of the derived mode. The patch below fixes php-mode for me, as
well as the sml-mode package from unsupported/scop, which after this
hack, is finally working in XEmacs :)
Maybe The Right Thing would be to "fix" derived.el? Anyway, I'll commit
this one unless someone tells me that it's horribly wrong and will break
when/if define-derived-mode works like a defun with autoload cookies.
Of course, better ideas/fixes are appreciated.

current CVS crashes with seg fault

(started with -vanilla). If I remember correctly I got the same crash
with stock 21.5-b7.

Hi,
There are two unicode.el's in the most recent XEmacs core and
the Mule-UCS package. It won't cause an actual problem because
the unicode module is dumped in the XEmacs executable. However,
if someone has installed Mule-UCS in the site-lisp directory for
developing or any other purposes (it's me :-p), building XEmacs
will be failed as follows:

XEmacs complains about unbalanced parentheses in c++-mode when
everything is OK for the human eye and the C++ compiler.
The following test case should help reproduce the problem :
In c++-mode, type the following constructor :
Scroll::Scroll(EcranPrincipal* ecran, Palette* pPalette)
: ScrollBar(ecran->getDisplay(), pPalette),
_intervalle(Intervalle(), Pas(1))
{}
Now indent the "_intervalle(Intervalle(), Pas(1))" expression by pressing tab.
XEmacs will beep and indicates you have unbalanced parentheses.

Hi Gang!
Well, the first release is out the door. It's gonna take a few more
of those before that becomes 2nd nature, so please bear with me. I'm
sure I'm going to make some mistakes. :-)
The hardest thing I found with doing the release was writing the
CHANGES-Beta file. From now on I am going to try to keep it up to
date as the patches go in. If anyone wants to include a CHANGES-Beta
entry with their submitted patches, that would be fantastic. But
please, don't feel obligated to do that.
Other Points and Thoughts:

Build Reports:
-------------
I'm going to try to keep a database of the submitted build reports to
see what kinds of invaluable information we can learn. Is there
anyone who could set up a PostgreSQL database to do this for me?
I'd like to encourage you all to send in a build report _every_ time
you build XEmacs. The more data I can gather the better the quality
of the information that can be gathered from that data.
Patches:
-------
I'll do my best to review as much as I can but if you read "Steve's
TODO list" on -design you'll understand that I'm going to be pretty
busy.
Bug Reports:
-----------
I want to keep on top of these. My goal here is to make sure that no
bug reports get forgotten and that they are all dealt with.
Release Frequency:
-----------------
I've seen and heard promises of weekly or fortnightly releases from
previous XBRM's. I'm not sure that I want to make such a promise.
Besides, if I don't promise the world you won't be disappointed. :-)
What I will say is that there will probably be more releases than
we've had recently.
Also, I want to co-ordinate with the "Big Players" so I can put out
releases just prior and just after major changes. Our current "Big
Players" would be: Ben Wing, Mike Sperber, Andy Piper, and Jerry
James.
If you guys could give me a quick heads up prior to big changes I'll
do my best to get a release out before the change. And shortly
afterwards so people can test it.
Snapshot Releases:
-----------------
Do we want them? I could probably set up a script to run from cron on
my account on Tux to do a cvs up, then build a tarball each night. I
won't do this unless people think it'd be a good idea.
Feedback:
--------
I want it! The good, the bad, and the ugly. If you think I'm doing a
terrible job, tell me. I'm an Aussie and I guarantee that you can't
offend me, so don't hold back. Of course, I'd like to hear good
things too. :-)
