This site is provisional, remember that the primary distribution
place for APEL is:

APEL stands for A Portable Emacs Library. This package includes:
* emulation modules to share Emacs Lisp programs by various Emacsen
* basic functions to write portable Emacs Lisp programs
* modules to provide coding-system and MIME charset related features
* utilities to write portable CCL programs
* etc...
XEmacs users should be careful of the following things:
* There are differences between the XEmacs APEL package and this.
Since some programs (e.g. Wanderlust, T-gnus and emacs-w3m) presume
that *this* version of APEL is used, you should replace the XEmacs
APEL package with it if you use those such programs. For example:
% rm -fr /usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/apel
% cd apel-10.4
% make install-package XEMACS=xemacs-21.4.10\
PACKAGEDIR=/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages
It does not mean the XEmacs APEL package is inferior, those versions
are simply different.
* In principle, APEL built by XEmacs with the Mule feature can be used
by only XEmacs with Mule. Similarly, APEL built by non-Mule XEmacs
can be used by only XEmacs without the Mule feature in principle.
This issue is not applied to the XEmacs APEL package.

Having reviewed the changes it seems that this can only be one of two
things:
(1) Stephen's changes have a bug
(2) The original syntax code has a bug when lookup-syntax-properties is
turned off.
To eliminate (2) can you try setting
(setq-default lookup-syntax-properties t)
in your init.el file, and see if that helps. I cannot reproduce your
problems as yet.

and then press "b" in a dired buffer ~\emacs\elisp containing .el and
.elc files on Win2000, XEmacs crashes. I think the problem is 2-fold:
1. While calling the form (file-newer-than-file-p (concat name "c")
name), dired binds "name" to the whole text in the dired buffer,
not to a single file name.
2. file-newer-than-file-p crashes with such unreasonable "file name".

I have a serious problem with 21.4.9. Each time I do su to edit a
file as root using xemacs, when I select text it hangs forever.
This doesn't seem to happen if I am not root.

Is it possible to set buffer-file-coding-system-for-read to a coding
system such that:
1. Loading a file, modifying it, and saving it does not change its EOL
type.
2. Line breaks are auto-detected (and displayed without control
charatcers etc).
?
I find that 'no-coding satisfies 1 but I have to live with ^M's, and
that every other coding system I try uses a particular, fixed, eol
type for write. I expected 'undecided to be the answer, but this
strips CR's from CRLF encoded files on write.
