In Martin's absence, I'm going to release a beta before I too head off
on vacation (July 30--August 13). I think I got everything right, but
Martin's procedures are undocumented (except as Perl code) and differ
slightly from mine.
One thing I can't do anything about quickly is the fact that the beta
directory is read-only except to Martin.
FOR THIS RELEASE ONLY, the tarballs and patch file are in
ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/beta/tmp-21.5
They will be moved once the Tux administrators have changed the
permissions.
The CVS procedures are unchanged, and as far as I can tell the r21-5-2
tag has been added and the r21-5-current-beta tag has been moved to
reflect the release. If there is a problem with CVS, any of the
reviewers with shell access at ftp.xemacs.org should be able to fix.
Please do, I will be only intermittently able to access the 'net for
the next 2-1/2 weeks.

Add wrap_* to all objects (it was already there for a few of them)
-- an expression to encapsulate a pointer into a Lisp object,
rather than the inconvenient XSET*. "wrap" was chosen because
"make" as in make_int(), make_char() is not appropriate. (It
implies allocation. The issue does not exist for ints and chars
because they are not allocated.)
Full error checking has been added to these expressions. When
used without error checking, non-union build, use of these
expressions will incur no loss of efficiency. (In fact, XSET* is
now defined in terms of wrap_* in a non-union build.) In a union
build, you will also get no loss of efficiency provided that you
have a decent optimizing compiler, and a compiler that either
understands inlines or automatically inlines those particular
functions. (And since people don't normally do their production
builds on union, it doesn't matter.)

FIXING A CRASH THAT I REPEATEDLY HIT WHEN USING THE MOUSE WHEEL

Basic idea: My crash is due either to a dead, non-marked,
GC-collected frame inside of a window mirror, or a prematurely
freed window mirror. We need to mark the Lisp objects inside of
window mirrors. Tracking the lifespan of window mirrors and
scrollbar instances is extremely hard, and there may well be
lurking bugs where such objects are freed too soon. The only safe
way to fix these problems (and it fixes both problems at once) is
to make both of these structures Lisp objects.

GC-protect it in a hash table, like in MS Windows.

I already explained in a previous changelog entry why I think these
macros should be the way I'd defined them. Once again:
We fix these macros so they don't care about the type of their
lvalues. The non-C-string equivalents of these already function
in the same way, and it's correct because it should be OK to pass
in a CBufbyte *, a BufByte *, a Char_Binary *, an UChar_Binary *,
etc. The whole reason for these different types is to work around
errors caused by signed-vs-unsigned non-matching types. Any
possible error that might be caught in a DFC macro would also be
caught wherever the argument is used elsewhere. So creating
multiple macro versions would add no useful error-checking and
just further complicate an already complicated area.
As for Martin's "ANSI aliasing" bug, XEmacs is not ANSI-aliasing
clean and probably never will be. Unless the board agrees to
change XEmacs in this way (and we really don't want to go down
that road), this is not a bug.

sorry i have been out of the loop lately. my dsl has been down for a week [and
is still down!], so my connectivity is quite reduced. it's also been the first
week of school. i have recently read the messages and will try to fix the
problems mentioned. in the meantime i've done a lot more work; in particular,
the unicode encapsulation is fully present. what this means is:
[1] whenever running on nt, xemacs automatically uses the unicode versions of
the Windows API's, which are faster and more importantly allow text in arbitrary
languages [even mixed] to be passed back and forth.
[2] on 95, we use the built-in WideCharToMultiByte API to convert to the
multi-byte API and automatically use the ANSI versions of the Windows API's.
thus, we need no translation tables for particular windows codepages.
[3] we correctly support both input and display of IME [Japanese, Chinese, etc.]
and non-IME [Russian, Greek, Polish, Hebrew, etc.] languages, in both 95 and
NT. the only missing combination currently is IME input in 95, which is easy to
fix and is high on my list.
the above mean that we now can handle most languages without [too much] problem.
There is still the dreaded "Russian C-x" problem, which i'm in the middle of
fixing [C-x when in the Russian layout doesn't do what you think it should do
because the x key produces a Cyrillic character].
i've enabled file-coding by default in all circumstances; under unix non-mule
non-cygwin everything defaults to binary, so you get exactly what you'd get
without file-coding. you can change this, though, with a configure flag,
--with-default-encoding-detection or something, which puts back the automatic
file encoding detection that's normally present. [#### this may not work
perfectly quite yet.]
we still don't support pdump, Cygwin, or non-mule, [and perhaps unix] but i'm
working on those, too.
i'll have more time over the weekend and i'll answer specific emails then.
all of the above is checked in to branch `ben-mule-21-5'. I am updating the
file README.ben-mule-21-5 at the end of each day I do some work, and I've
recently created TODO.ben-mule-21-5, containing a prioritized list of what i'm
working on.
as always, i'm always looking for testers; bear in mind the above restrictions.

I'm looking for testers. There is a complete and fast implementation
in C of Unicode conversion, translations for almost all of the
standardly-defined charsets that load up automatically and
instantaneously at runtime, coding systems supporting the common
external representations of Unicode [utf-16, ucs-4, utf-8,
little-endian versions of utf-16 and ucs-4; utf-7 is sitting there
with abort[]s where the coding routines should go, just waiting for
somebody to implement], and a nice set of primitives for translating
characters<->codepoints and setting the priority lists used to control
codepoint->char lookup.
It's so far hooked into one place: the Windows IME. Currently I can
select the Japanese IME from the thing on my tray pad in the lower
right corner of the screen, and type Japanese into XEmacs, and you get
Japanese in XEmacs -- regardless of whether you set either your
current or global system locale to Japanese,and regardless of whether
you set your XEmacs lang env as Japanese. This should work for many
other languages, too -- Cyrillic, Chinese either Traditional or
Simplified, and many others, but YMMV. There may be some lurking
bugs (hardly surprising for something so raw).
To get at this, checkout using `ben-mule-21-5', NOT the simpler
*`mule-21-5'. For example

or you get the idea. the `-r ben-mule-21-5' is important.

Just been thinking about this.
A nice solution to distributing XEmacs packages that need some kind of
helper app (eg Eicq) would be:
- The helper app gets distributed in source form only.
- On first invocation of the package some clever lisp would
configure/compile the app and install it into lib-src.
Sound like a fun hack?

Since adding support for debugging to my latest c++ code, it's become
ugly with #ifdefs. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to fold them away?
Since C-mode already knows how to parse the ifdefs and find the
matching endif (the hard part), it may be possible to add such a
feature. I imagine being able to set local file variables to make all
that crap disappear, for example.

the various integral types have gotten quite confusing. stephen and i have had
a discussion about this [it was open, but no one else seemed interested in
participating], and reached some consensus.
now is a good time to make global changes, since few people are working on the
code. so, i'm planning on making the following changes in a few days, all of
which involve renaming an integral type:

Extcount, Memory_Count, Lstream_Data_Count, Bytecount -> Bytecount
Element_Count -> Elemcount
[buffer positions, 1 based]

[characters referring to text]

this should make much clearer the semantics of the various types, and which are

On NT XEmacs, if you start up XEmacs, do a make-frame, minimize one of
the frames, and then do a delete-frame on the remaining frame, NT
XEmacs reports an error about attempting to delete the sole visible or

Contrary to what this shows, the report-xemacs-bug function is broken
in that it refers to the report-emacs-bug-hook which is not defined
anywhere in the relese of XEmacs that I have. To get this to work, I
